Qantas Data Breach: 6 Million Passengers Affected

Qantas Data Breach Impacts Millions of Passengers
Qantas, the prominent Australian airline, announced on Wednesday the occurrence of a significant data breach.
This security incident has potentially exposed the personal information belonging to a minimum of six million passengers.
Details of the Security Incident
According to the airline, the breach originated from a cybercriminal’s targeting of one of its call centers on June 30th.
The attacker successfully extracted customer data from Qantas’ systems.
Compromised data includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and frequent flyer numbers.
Recent Trend of Airline Hacks
Qantas joins a growing list of airlines recently affected by data breaches.
A series of similar incidents have been attributed to a hacking group known as Scattered Spider.
This collective is recognized for its sophisticated methods of infiltrating the networks of large organizations.
In June, WestJet, a Canadian airline, also reported a data breach, with media outlets connecting it to Scattered Spider.
Furthermore, Hawaiian Airlines disclosed a similar security incident just last week.
Investigation and Security Alerts
Mandiant, the security division of Google, stated to TechCrunch on Wednesday that it is currently premature to definitively link the Qantas hack to Scattered Spider.
However, Mandiant cautioned airlines to remain on “high alert” for potential social engineering attacks.
These attacks often serve as the initial access point for malicious actors.
The airline industry is facing increased scrutiny regarding its cybersecurity posture in light of these recent events.
