Medium Reaffirms Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The publishing platform, Medium, has publicly stated its continued dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This commitment persists despite a trend among numerous other U.S.-based technology companies to reduce their DEI initiatives, often in response to pressure from the previous administration.

CEO Stubblebine's Stance

In a blog post released on Monday, Medium’s CEO, Tony Stubblebine, expressed his support for the platform’s diverse community. He asserted that businesses should not be forced to select between fostering inclusion and achieving profitability.

Stubblebine further emphasized that a greater number of individuals prioritize understanding and respect over animosity and division. He explained that engaging in culture wars and aggressive confrontation is not an effective method for influencing perspectives.

The Value of Diverse Voices

As a platform for publishing, Medium recognizes the benefits of incorporating diverse viewpoints. The platform’s audience, seeking to broaden their comprehension of the world, perceives diversity as a valuable asset rather than a source of concern.

“A comprehensive understanding of any situation necessitates hearing from individuals with life experiences differing from one’s own,” the CEO articulated. “The perspectives of those from marginalized communities represent crucial viewpoints that merit consideration.”

Diversity as a Competitive Edge

Stubblebine also contends that diversity provides a significant competitive advantage.

“I am confident, as CEO, that embracing diversity as a core strategy enhances our company’s business, cultural, and intellectual capabilities,” he stated.

Platform Policies and Content Moderation

Medium’s policies are centered on cultivating a respectful environment for both readers and writers. The platform actively prohibits “hateful content, threats of violence, harassment, racial slurs, the promotion of unsubstantiated claims or misinformation, harmful stereotypes, intentional misgendering, and other detrimental behaviors” that threaten the community.

Contrasting Approaches: Medium vs. Substack

This approach contrasts sharply with the content moderation policies of Medium’s competitor, Substack. Substack adopts a more permissive “free speech” philosophy.

Consequently, Substack has become a platform for white nationalists, which subsequently triggered a negative reaction from its user base.

Hamish McKenzie, a co-founder of Substack, has publicly stated that the company does not believe that measures like demonetizing blogs would effectively address the issue of harmful content.

A Principled Stand

Medium is charting a different course. In a climate where maintaining DEI policies has become increasingly politicized, this represents a position taken by a limited number of organizations.

Corporate Trends in DEI

Numerous major U.S. corporations, including McDonald’s, Harley-Davidson, Booz Allen, John Deere, Lowe’s, Ford, Molson Coors, Walmart, and Target, have recently scaled back their DEI programs. However, companies like Apple, Delta, Costco, JPMorgan, and McKinsey have affirmed their ongoing commitment to diversity initiatives.

Medium's Growth and Financials

Founded by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, Medium saw Tony Stubblebine assume the CEO role in July 2022, with Williams transitioning to chairman of the board.

The company currently boasts over one million paying subscribers and reaches 100 million individuals monthly, encompassing both readers and writers. Medium reported its first profitable month last summer, though as a privately held company, it does not publicly disclose its financial earnings.
