macOS Issues Today: Non-Apple Apps Crashing

If you are a Mac user with a recent macOS installation – specifically Catalina or Big Sur – and are experiencing unusual operational problems, you are not isolated in this experience.

We are receiving numerous reports from both individuals and software creators regarding a problem that hinders applications – especially those developed by third parties – from initiating correctly. The majority of users state that applications already running function normally, but any attempt to start a new application results in prolonged, repetitive bouncing in the Dock.

This problem initially surfaced earlier today (interestingly, around the time macOS Big Sur was released) and appears to be resolving for some users. However, it’s important to understand that your applications may not perform as anticipated for the present time.

The precise cause remains unknown, but the prevailing hypothesis suggests a server-side complication with Gatekeeper, the security protocol that confirms the validity of macOS applications upon startup.

Update: According to Apple’s Developer System Status page, as of shortly after 2:00 PM Pacific Time, this issue has been resolved.
