Panic Playdate Preorders Open July 29 | Retro Handheld

Playdate Preorders: A Launch Date is Set
The Playdate, a uniquely charming handheld game system developed by Panic in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, is nearing its official release. A firm date for preorders has now been established.
Panic revealed today that preorders for this nostalgic device will commence on July 29th at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
Essential Preorder Information
Those interested in securing a unit from the initial production run should be aware of the following details:
- The Playdate handheld will be priced at $179. An optional protective case will be available for purchase at $29.
- A bundled package, including both the handheld and the case, will be offered for $199, providing a slight cost saving.
- Currently, there is no confirmed release date for the previously announced docking station.
While a precise shipping date remains tentative, Panic anticipates that the first 20,000 units will begin shipping “towards the end of the year.” Further units are expected to be dispatched throughout 2022.
It’s important to note that Panic is not imposing a preorder cap, meaning the system won’t technically “sell out.” However, earlier orders will be fulfilled first, ensuring quicker delivery.
Preorders are limited to a maximum of two units per individual.
A Unique Gaming Experience
Originally unveiled in 2019, the Playdate introduces a novel approach to game distribution. Games are delivered in “seasons,” with two new titles released each week for a duration of 12 weeks during the first season.
Panic emphasizes the experimental nature of the games, acknowledging that not every title will appeal to all players. However, they assure users that the experience will be enjoyable and engaging. As stated on their product page: “Some are short. Some are long. Will you love them all? Probably not. Will you have a great time trying them? Absolutely.”
