Powder Raises $14M to Revolutionize Game Clip Sharing

Powder Secures $14 Million in Series A Funding

Powder, a startup originating in France, is dedicated to facilitating the sharing of video clips from favored games, enabling users to connect with individuals sharing similar passions, and fostering interaction between them. The company has recently completed a $14 million Series A funding round, spearheaded by Serena.

Building a Video Infrastructure for Social Gaming

Powder’s ambition is to establish a comprehensive video infrastructure specifically tailored for social gaming. While platforms like Twitch, Discord, and Reddit already host gaming content, a leading mobile application concentrating solely on gaming experiences has been absent.

The platform can be likened to Instagram or Snapchat, but with specialized functionalities designed to differentiate it from these established social media networks.

Content Capture from Multiple Platforms

Powder offers the capability to record video content from a variety of sources. Users can capture footage directly from their gaming consoles by linking their accounts.

A dedicated desktop application allows for video recording on PCs, and the platform also supports the capture of videos from mobile games.

Intelligent Event Detection

The company’s technology actively identifies significant moments within your preferred games. This includes events such as scoring a goal in Rocket League or achieving the final survivor status in Fortnite.

Video Editing and Sharing Features

Following capture, videos can be trimmed, enhanced with filters, accompanied by music, and decorated with stickers before being shared with followers.

Other users are then able to express reactions, contribute comments, and exchange messages.

To date, Powder has amassed a total of $18 million in funding, openly detailing its financial journey.

The company initially secured $400,000 in a pre-seed round in August 2018, with investment from Kima Ventures and the Zenly co-founders, Antoine Martin and Alexis Bonillo.

In March 2019, a further $1.5 million was invested by General Catalyst, Slow Ventures, Dream Machine, SV Angel, Brian Pokorny, Florian Kahn, and Guillaume Luccisano.

A $1.3 million seed extension followed in May 2020, with contributions from Alven Capital, Seraam Invest, Farmers, Maxime Demeure, Jean-Nicolas Vernin, and existing investors. Bpifrance and CNC also participated in this round.

Most recently, Serena led the $14 million Series A round, with participation from General Catalyst, Slow Ventures, Alven Capital, Bpifrance’s Digital Venture fund, Secocha Ventures, Turner Novak, and Kevin Hartz.

Iterative Development and Community Focus

Powder’s path to success has been characterized by iterative development. The company explored numerous consumer app concepts, abandoning those that didn’t demonstrate potential.

This approach has seemingly yielded a successful distribution strategy, driving downloads and user acquisition.

“The concept for Powder originated in December 2019,” explains co-founder and CEO Stanislas Coppin. “Having previously worked on several projects that didn’t gain traction, we decided to prioritize building a community before developing a product.” Coppin previously co-founded the music video application, Mindie.

From Discord Server to Mobile App

Powder began as a Discord server, rapidly growing to encompass tens of thousands of members. The team subsequently developed an application designed to cater to this community, described by Coppin as a “metaverse camera.”

The iOS app has been downloaded by 1.5 million users since its initial release.

Team and Expansion

The company is led by a team of four co-founders: Barthélémy Kiss, Yannis Mangematin, Christian Navelot, and Stanislas Coppin.

Currently employing 18 individuals, Powder has recently launched its application on the Android platform.
