Netflix Executives Face Police Case Over 'A Suitable Boy' Kissing Scene

Netflix, having invested over $500 million to establish itself in India in recent years, is discovering the potential for widespread disapproval within the world’s second-largest internet market: seemingly from any direction.

This week, a legal complaint was registered against two senior executives from the American streaming platform in India following objections raised by a representative of the ruling political party regarding certain content within a television series.

The series, titled “A Suitable Boy,” is based on the acclaimed novel by Indian author Vikram Seth, chronicling the experiences of a young woman. A particular scene depicts the central character sharing a kiss with a Muslim man within the confines of a Hindu temple.

Narottam Mishra, the Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh state, stated that a First Information Report – an official police document – had been filed against Monika Shergill, Netflix’s Vice President of Content, and Ambika Khurana, the company’s Director of Public Policies, due to scenes deemed offensive and harmful to the religious feelings of Hindus.

“I instructed officials to review the series ‘A Suitable Boy’ available on Netflix to determine if kissing scenes were filmed in a temple and if they offended religious sensibilities. The initial investigation suggests that these scenes are indeed causing offense to a specific religious group,” he explained.

Gaurav Tiwari, a youth leader from the BJP who submitted the complaint, called for an apology from both Netflix and the series’ creators (directed by renowned filmmaker Mira Nair), alleging that the show promotes “love jihad,” a discriminatory and unsubstantiated theory claiming Muslim men deliberately pursue relationships with Hindu women to convert them to Islam through marriage.

Netflix has not issued a public statement on the matter.

Numerous individuals have recently voiced their discontent on social media regarding these “objectionable” scenes. It remains uncertain whether these individuals are, in fact, Netflix subscribers.

This situation arises shortly after an advertisement from the luxury jewelry brand Tanishq – a division of a large, diversified conglomerate – which celebrated interfaith marriage, faced significant public criticism within the country.

The timing of this controversy is unfavorable for Netflix. It follows closely on the heels of the Indian government’s announcement of new regulations for digital media, granting the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting authority to oversee online streaming platforms. Previously, the IT ministry provided a substantial level of autonomy to these services, according to a leading executive in the streaming industry.
