Polestar Precept to Production: New Name & 2024 Release

Polestar 5: From Concept to Reality
The Polestar Precept sedan, initially showcased as a concept vehicle, has been officially renamed and is slated for production. The electric performance brand, originating from Volvo Car Group, has designated the uniquely shaped sedan as the Polestar 5, with manufacturing commencing in 2024.
Initial Concept and Production Announcement
Upon its unveiling in early 2020, the Precept was largely considered a concept car, though a visually compelling one that indicated the future direction of the company. Polestar subsequently announced in September of the same year that the Precept would transition into a production model.
However, a specific timeframe for production wasn't provided initially, beyond an estimated launch “before 2025.”
Design Insights and Inspiration
Since the initial announcement, Polestar has released a series of teasers and details regarding the Precept sedan. These included several YouTube videos offering a glimpse into the design, development, and anticipated production processes.
The most recent video concentrates on the influences behind the exterior design, featuring insights from Nahum Escobedo, the exterior design manager for the Precept.
The Influence of Nature and Engineering
Escobedo reveals that the sharp exterior lines were partially inspired by both sharks and airplanes. He explains, “For this project we also wanted something that was very elegant, but also something that has a certain speed,” adding, “So for me, the shark had this certain feeling.”
The distinctive rear end of the Polestar 5 prominently features the long aero blade light, a design element carried over from the original concept.
Future Specifications and Production Timeline
Currently, Polestar has not disclosed specific details concerning the vehicle’s battery range or powertrain specifications. It is confirmed that the Polestar 5 will follow the Polestar 3, an all-electric SUV, which is expected to begin production in 2022.
Polestar’s Vehicle Lineup
Polestar’s initial production vehicle was the plug-in hybrid grand tourer, Polestar 1. This was followed by the all-electric Polestar 2 sedan in 2020. The designation for Polestar 4 remains unconfirmed, though the company appears to be maintaining a numeric naming convention.
Recent Company Developments
These updates regarding the Polestar 5, formerly known as the Precept, arrive following significant financial and expansion announcements earlier in the year.
In late September, Polestar announced an agreement to become a publicly traded company through a merger with Gores Guggenheim Inc., valuing the combined entity at $20 billion. Upon completion of the merger, the new public company will be named Polestar Automotive Holding UK Limited and will trade on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “PSNY.”
US Manufacturing Plans
Furthermore, in June, Polestar announced plans to manufacture the Polestar 3 within the United States. Assembly will take place at a shared facility with Volvo Cars in Ridgeville, South Carolina, with global production scheduled to commence in 2022.
