Podz: A New Approach to Podcast Discovery

Podz is a recently launched startup focused on improving how people find and enjoy podcasts. The company has secured investment from prominent figures including M13, Katie Couric, and Paris Hilton.

The Challenge of Podcast Discovery

Despite the growing popularity of podcasts – with 100 million listeners in the U.S. – integrating audio into daily routines remains a challenge. CEO Doug Imbruce contends that the current podcast discovery and consumption experience feels outdated, akin to navigating the internet in 1997.

A Founder's Previous Venture

Doug Imbruce is not new to the startup world. He previously served as the chief executive of Qwiki, a company that gained recognition at TechCrunch Disrupt in 2010, before being acquired by Yahoo.

Lessons from Qwiki and a Vision for the Future

While Qwiki didn't fully realize its potential, Imbruce believes it offered a glimpse into the future of “machine-created media.” He is now aiming to bring that vision to fruition with Podz.

The Core Problem Podz Addresses

Podcasts, often lengthy in duration – typically 30 to 60 minutes or more – present difficulties for browsing. New podcast discoveries frequently rely on word-of-mouth or cumbersome search methods.

Automated Clip Creation

Although tools like Headliner assist podcasters in promoting their content with short clips, Podz automates this process and centers the listening experience around these clips.

The Podz mobile application features what the company calls “the first audio newsfeed.” This feed consists of 60-second clips extracted from podcasts, designed to showcase the most compelling moments and facilitate sampling a wider range of content.

Each clip is intended to be self-contained, with the option to save the full episode for later listening.

Machine Learning at the Heart of Podz

The creation of these clips is automated, driven by a machine learning model that identifies the most engaging segments within podcasts. This model was developed using over 100,000 hours of audio, with input from journalists and audio editors.

Example Clips and Speaker Focus

For instance, clips were generated from recent episodes of the Original Content podcast, focusing on reviews of “Soul,” “The White Tiger,” and “Bridgerton.” The app prioritizes “the highest density speakers” when selecting clip content.

Personalized Recommendations

The Podz newsfeed is tailored to user interests and can integrate with existing podcast subscriptions from Apple Podcasts and followed accounts on Twitter. The system is designed to improve its recommendations over time based on listener behavior.

Future Plans: Creator Tools and Monetization

The Podz team intends to introduce tools for podcasters to enhance creativity and monetization opportunities. Their goal is to significantly increase both the volume of audio content created and the revenue generated from it.

The Podz Team and Funding

The Podz founding team includes CTO Seye Ojumu, Head of Design Rasmus Zwickson, and iOS lead Greg Page, alongside CEO Doug Imbruce.

The startup has raised $2.5 million in pre-seed funding from investors such as M13, Canaan Partners, Charge Ventures, and Humbition, as well as angel investors including Katie Couric, Paris Hilton, and Mara Schiavocampo.

Investor Perspective

Latif Peracha, a General Partner at M13, stated that while a golden age of audio exists, only a small percentage of podcasts reach a substantial audience. Podz aims to expand the audience for existing podcasts and foster the creation of new audio content through its creator tools. Early data suggests users subscribe to seven podcasts but follow nearly 30 on Podz, indicating a promising trajectory.
