Pixel Watch 3: Loss of Pulse Detection Coming to the US in March

Google Pixel Watch 3 Receives FDA Clearance for Loss of Pulse Detection

Google revealed on Wednesday that its Pixel Watch 3 has been granted clearance by the FDA for its innovative “Loss of Pulse Detection” capability. This feature is scheduled for release in the United States by the close of March.

How Loss of Pulse Detection Works

This functionality is designed to identify instances where a user’s heartbeat ceases due to critical events. These events include primary cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory system failures, drug overdoses, or instances of poisoning.

Upon detecting a lack of pulse, the watch will prompt the wearer to confirm their well-being. Should the user fail to respond, the device will automatically initiate a call to emergency services, potentially delivering crucial, life-saving assistance.

Availability and Initial Launch

The Loss of Pulse Detection feature was initially introduced in the European Union in September 2024. Currently, it is accessible in a total of 14 countries.

Underlying Technology

During the unveiling of this feature at the 2024 Made by Google event, Google highlighted that the watch’s determination of a loss of pulse isn't solely based on pulse checks. It also incorporates analysis of other physiological signals and movement data.

These various data points are then integrated and assessed using a sophisticated, AI-powered algorithm.

Important Considerations and Limitations

Google emphasizes that “Loss of Pulse Detection” isn't foolproof and may not identify every instance of pulse loss. It is not intended for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or those requiring continuous cardiac monitoring.

The feature is not a diagnostic tool, nor does it provide treatment or ongoing medical care. Successful emergency calls are contingent upon factors like device charge and sufficient cellular network coverage.

Expanding the Pixel Watch’s Safety Features

This new capability complements the Pixel Watch’s existing suite of safety and health features. These include Car Crash Detection, Fall Detection, Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications, and the integrated ECG app.

Here's a summary of the key features:

  • Loss of Pulse Detection: Identifies cessation of heartbeat.
  • Car Crash Detection: Detects severe vehicle collisions.
  • Fall Detection: Recognizes hard falls.
  • Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications: Alerts users to potential atrial fibrillation.
  • ECG App: Provides electrocardiogram readings.
