AI Smartwatch for Kids | Pinwheel

A New Smartwatch Option for Connected Families
For parents, providing a smart device to their children presents challenges due to the numerous online risks. Pinwheel, a technology company specializing in kid-friendly products, is introducing a novel solution. This allows parents to maintain connection with their children without the complexities of a traditional smartphone.
Introducing the Pinwheel Watch
The Pinwheel Watch, recently released, is a smartwatch specifically engineered for children between the ages of 7 and 14. It offers a secure alternative, blocking access to social media platforms and the broader internet. Parental controls, GPS tracking, a built-in camera, voice-to-text messaging, engaging mini-games, and surprisingly, an AI chatbot are all included.
Design and Cost
The smartwatch boasts a modern black design and a screen size slightly larger than that of an Apple Watch. Currently, it is priced at $160, accompanied by a $15 monthly subscription fee. Purchases are available through Pinwheel.com, and the device has been undergoing testing over the past several days.
PinwheelGPT: The AI Assistant
Beyond standard parental controls, the watch features an AI assistant called “PinwheelGPT.” This is a feature that may raise some parental concerns.
PinwheelGPT is positioned as a safer alternative to conventional AI chatbots. It enables children to pose questions on a variety of subjects, including everyday inquiries, social dynamics, and schoolwork, according to the company.
However, awareness of potential misinformation generated by AI chatbots is growing among parents. Concerns also exist that the conversational nature of these bots could foster reliance on digital companionship, potentially diminishing face-to-face interactions with family and peers.
Safety Measures and Parental Oversight
The company assures users that safety protocols are in place. The AI is programmed to identify and avoid sensitive or inappropriate topics, directing children to discuss such matters with a trusted adult. Initial testing confirmed the AI’s ability to deflect unsuitable or violent inquiries.
Furthermore, parents have complete access to all chatbot interactions, including past conversations, allowing for proactive monitoring and intervention if needed.
“We haven’t encountered resistance from parents, as they retain the ability to remove PinwheelGPT from the watch or disable it through their own controls,” stated founder Dane Witbeck, a father of four. “We do not utilize any user data – whether from minors or adults – to train our AI models,” he added.
Company Growth and Market Positioning
Pinwheel launched its first child-safe phone in 2020 and has since experienced significant growth, ranking No. 212 on the 2024 Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing American companies.
Expanding into the smartwatch market represents a logical step, enabling the company to compete more effectively in the approximately $100 billion smart wearable market alongside established brands like Apple and Fitbit. Pinwheel aims to differentiate itself by concentrating specifically on the needs of children.
This approach sets it apart from devices like Fitbit’s Ace LTE, which primarily focuses on location and health tracking.
Features Beyond AI
In addition to the AI functionality, the watch allows children to make calls and send texts using voice commands or an on-screen keyboard. A camera facilitates video calls and selfies, and a voice recorder app is also included.
Other applications include an alarm, calendar, calculator, and a selection of mini-games, reminiscent of Tetris.
Parental Control Features
Parental monitoring is managed through the “Caregiver” app. This allows parents to create a “Safelist” of approved contacts, restricting communication to those individuals and blocking unwanted numbers.
A “Schedule” tab enables parents to establish different modes, limiting device usage during specific times, such as school or camp. For example, contacts can be restricted to emergency numbers during school hours, then expanded to “All mode” later in the day.
Parents can also choose to monitor text messages, which is particularly useful for younger children. An AI text summary feature provides concise overviews of message threads.
Availability
The Pinwheel Watch is currently available for purchase in the U.S., with plans to launch in the U.K. this fall. It will also be available on Amazon later this summer, though a specific date has not yet been announced.
This article has been updated to reflect accurate regional availability; the watch is not currently available in Australia or Canada.
