Pinterest Introduces Video Replies to Comments

Pinterest has recently implemented a new functionality enabling users to respond to comments using videos. This capability is now available through the platform’s Idea Pins feature.

Earlier this year, Pinterest unveiled Idea Pins, designed to empower creators with the ability to record and edit videos. These videos can extend up to 20 pages in length, incorporating tools for voiceover, music, transitions, and interactive components.

Replying with Idea Pins

When encountering a comment requiring a response, users can now access a three-dot menu and select the “reply with an Idea Pin” option. This allows for the creation of a new video or the uploading of a pre-existing one.

“Engagement with your Pinterest community is now more versatile than ever,” the company announced. “Responding to comments, questions, and requests can be done with a customized Idea Pin reply.”

The company explained that this feature was developed to move beyond lengthy text-based replies, recognizing that certain responses are more effectively conveyed through video.

Following Industry Trends

This launch closely follows a similar introduction by Instagram. Last week, Instagram debuted “Reels Visual Replies,” allowing users to respond to comments with Reels videos.

Users replying to comments on Instagram will now find a new option to create a video response by selecting the Reels button.

The Origin of Video Replies

The concept of video replies initially gained prominence on TikTok. Last year, TikTok introduced this feature to provide users with a means to offer more detailed context and address inquiries.

Given the feature’s popularity, it’s unsurprising that both Instagram and Pinterest have adopted similar functionalities for their respective platforms.

Pinterest’s Investment in Creators

Over recent months, Pinterest has unveiled several new features geared towards creators. This includes an investment in creator tools and video content through the acquisition of the video editing app Vochi.

Furthermore, Pinterest introduced a new “Watch” tab for browsing Idea Pin videos, modeled after TikTok’s interface, and incentivized participation with $20 million in creator awards.

Adapting to the TikTok Era

These developments suggest Pinterest is actively seeking to redefine itself in the current social media landscape, heavily influenced by TikTok. This involves adopting TikTok features and integrating unique elements.

Pinterest is not the only platform pursuing this strategy; TikTok’s innovations have inspired similar features across numerous social media platforms, including Instagram, YouTube, Snap, and Reddit.
