Peloton Tread Returns: Enhanced Safety Features After Recall

Peloton Tread Re-Launch Following Safety Concerns
The connected fitness landscape experienced significant growth recently, however Peloton faced challenges. This was due to increased attention from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding its treadmill models, the Tread+ and Tread.
Recall and Remediation
Ultimately, a collaborative effort led to a planned recall of 125,000 Tread+ units. Furthermore, solutions were offered for 6,450 Treads – the more affordable model – which had a limited initial release, primarily in Canada.
New Tread Launch Details
Peloton is now announcing the complete launch, or re-launch, of the Tread. It will be available in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. starting August 30th, priced at $2,495 USD, $3,295 CAD, and £2,295 respectively.
A release in Germany is also planned for this fall, with a price point of €2,495. The press release surrounding the Tread’s re-launch prominently features the word “safety” eight times, highlighting its importance.
Enhanced Safety Features
The updated Tread incorporates several new safety measures. These include a requirement for a four-digit safety code to initiate each workout.
A physical safety key is also included. This key can be removed to immediately halt the treadmill and prevent unauthorized use. Users can retain the key during breaks to further secure the device.
The Tread’s dimensions are 68 x 33 x 62 inches, making it relatively compact. It features a 28.8-inch touchscreen that can tilt up to 50 degrees.
Background of Safety Issues
Initially, Peloton resisted the Tread+ recall. However, the CPSC’s concerns were amplified by the tragic death of a six-year-old child who was pulled under the rear of the machine.
Reports also indicated 72 incidents involving adults, children, pets, or objects being drawn under the treadmill’s rear. These incidents resulted in 29 injuries to children, including abrasions, broken bones, and lacerations.
Tread Touchscreen Issue
The original Tread model experienced a separate issue involving the touchscreen potentially detaching during use. This posed a risk of injury to users.
Customers who purchased the initial Tread version are eligible for a free touchscreen repair. These improvements have been integrated into the new units to prevent recurrence of the problem.
Refund Information for Tread+ Owners
Owners of the Tread+ have until November 6, 2022, to receive a full refund for their purchase.
