New Pebble Smartwatches: Creator Unveils Latest Models

A New Chapter for the Pebble Legacy
Resembling and functioning much like the original Pebble, yet distinct from it, two new smartwatches have been revealed by Eric Migicovsky, the initial creator of the Pebble smartwatch. These are named the Core 2 Duo and the Core Time 2.
Pre-order Availability and Pricing
These devices, acting as successors to the beloved Pebble smartwatches, are currently available for pre-order. The Core 2 Duo is priced at $149, while the Core Time 2 will cost $225.
The Original Pebble: A Kickstarter Success
For those unfamiliar, Pebble, a startup based in Palo Alto, was a pioneering success story on the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform, achieving this back in 2012. The company innovated in the smartwatch space before the emergence of the Apple Watch and Android-based alternatives.
Despite selling over 2 million units, Pebble unexpectedly ceased operations in 2016. Following an insolvency procedure, its remaining assets were acquired by Fitbit, which is now a part of Google.
Reviving the Spirit of Pebble
In 2024, Migicovsky conceived a compelling idea: a return to the simplicity of earlier technology and a revival of the original Pebble’s essence.
Google's Role in the Rebirth
Surprisingly, Google has been instrumental in this endeavor by open-sourcing PebbleOS, the operating system that powered the initial Pebble smartwatches.
Although Google acquired Fitbit after Fitbit obtained Pebble’s assets, the intellectual property of Pebble held limited value for Google. Consequently, the company opted to return it to the Pebble enthusiast community.
Introducing Core Devices
Now, Core Devices, Migicovsky’s new venture, has introduced two new smartwatches designed to operate on PebbleOS.
Core 2 Duo: A Modern Pebble 2
The Core 2 Duo can be considered a contemporary version of the Pebble 2, running the original Pebble software.
It features an always-on e-paper display accompanied by physical buttons on the device’s side. In comparison to many 2025 smartwatches, its functionality is relatively basic. The screen is a non-touch, monochrome display.
Connectivity and Features
The smartwatch connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth, enabling notification display and internet access. Bluetooth connectivity also allows for control of your phone’s music playback.
Key Strengths: Battery Life and Customization
The characteristics that distinguished the Pebble from its competitors remain relevant today. Firstly, the battery life is exceptional, with the company guaranteeing up to 30 days of use. Secondly, the device is highly customizable and adaptable, boasting thousands of watch faces and facilitating the creation of custom apps.
“This project is a labour of love rather than a startup trying to sell millions of watches,” Migicovsky stated in a blog post. “There may be some rough edges (literally). Delays are possible. Some features may not be available at launch. Issues could arise. Longevity isn’t guaranteed.”
“The only certainty is that it will be enjoyable and rewarding! Each glance at your watch will bring a smile 🙂,” he continued.
Core Time 2: Enhanced Display and Design
The other smartwatch announced by Migicovsky’s company, the Core Time 2, shares similar specifications with the Core 2 Duo, but incorporates a larger, 64-color display housed in a metal casing. It also features a touch display, although touch interactions are not currently supported by Pebble apps.
Shipping Timeline
Shipments for the Core 2 Duo are expected to commence in July.
The Core Time 2 will require additional production time and is scheduled for availability in December.
