Huboo Secures $81M Funding Amid E-commerce Boom

The Rise of Huboo in the E-commerce Fulfillment Landscape
Historically, numerous e-commerce enterprises have managed their complete order fulfillment processes internally, often due to perceived cost concerns associated with outsourcing. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated growth for many small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) as consumer behavior shifted towards home delivery and increased digital engagement. Consequently, this surge in e-commerce activity has spurred substantial expansion within the warehousing and shipping sectors.
Huboo: A Solution Tailored for the Post-Pandemic Market
Huboo appears ideally positioned to capitalize on this evolving market. The company offers a comprehensive, software-driven e-commerce warehousing and fulfillment solution that is proving highly beneficial to e-commerce-focused SMBs.
Recent Funding and Growth
The company recently secured £60 million (approximately $81.4 million) in Series B funding, spearheaded by U.S.-based Mubadala Capital. Existing investors, including Stride, Ada Ventures, Hearst, Episode 1, and Maersk Growth, also participated in this round. This brings Huboo’s total funding to nearly £80 million since its inception in April 2019, following a £14 million Series A funding round completed last year.
Expansion and Operational Model
Established in 2017 by Martin Bysh and Paul Dodd, initially operating from a single warehouse in Bristol, Huboo now boasts four fulfillment centers throughout the U.K. and a facility in the Netherlands. Further expansion into other European markets is planned. Each center is structured around “micro-hubs” – smaller spaces of a few hundred square feet – designed to enhance the efficiency of picking and packing operations. Huboo currently serves a customer base exceeding 1,000 businesses, ranging in size.
Platform Integration and Software Capabilities
Huboo’s merchant platform utilizes APIs to seamlessly integrate with prominent sales channels and online marketplaces, such as Amazon, eBay, and Shopify. This integration allows direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands to monitor and track orders, as well as manage their inventory through a centralized dashboard. The company also employs proprietary software to optimize warehouse operations.
CEO Perspective on Industry Challenges
Martin Bysh, co-founder and CEO of Huboo, commented: “A growing number of both new and established retail businesses are now prioritizing e-commerce, yet the underlying infrastructure supporting this sector is often outdated, inefficient, inflexible, and costly.”
The Micro-Hub Advantage
Bysh explained that their hub model addresses these issues, stating: “It delivers both flexibility and affordability to the complex fulfillment process, benefiting online retailers of all sizes – from part-time operators to rapidly expanding D2C leaders.”
Competitive Advantage Over Amazon FBA
In a recent discussion, Bysh elaborated: “We are attracting clients away from Amazon’s ‘Fulfilled By Amazon’ (FBA) service. While sellers pay a 20% fee to Amazon, a portion of this subsidizes inexpensive fulfillment. However, if you're utilizing FBA while also selling on platforms like eBay or Shopify, the costs become prohibitively high – roughly three times more expensive. Therefore, businesses using Shopify or eBay are finding our services particularly appealing… We are a strong competitor… Amazon has become less agile over time.”
Investor Insights
Fatou Bintou Sagnang, partner at Mubadala Capital Ventures, noted: “Huboo’s solution tackles a critical challenge for e-commerce companies – fulfillment is essential, but not a core competency. By combining logistics with a user-friendly software platform, Huboo provides a superior fulfillment experience, enabling businesses to concentrate on product development and meet increasing customer demand.”
U.K. Tech Success Story
Matt Penneycard, founding partner at Ada Ventures, expressed enthusiasm, stating: “Huboo exemplifies the success of U.K. technology, and we are especially proud to see a Bristol-based company achieving such significant progress! The vision of Martin and Paul is rapidly becoming a global reality.”
Innovation in Logistics and Team Empowerment
Fred Destin, founder at Stride.VC, highlighted: “Huboo achieves what many consider impossible – delivering high-precision e-commerce fulfillment cost-effectively to businesses of all sizes and complexities. Huboo’s innovative approach extends to both logistics, viewed as interconnected components managed by software, and its team, comprised of empowered individuals dedicated to customer success.”
