Pakistan Blocks Social Media - Latest Updates

Social Media Blocked in Pakistan
Reports from users and a government notice examined by TechCrunch indicate that Pakistan has enacted a temporary restriction on multiple social media platforms within its borders.
A directive, formally named “Complete Blocking of Social Media Platforms,” instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to halt access to platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Telegram. This block was implemented from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time on Friday (06:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. GMT).
Reasons for the Block
The action was taken as Pakistan seeks to suppress a violent extremist organization and deter potential disturbances during Friday prayer services, following a period of unrest and violent demonstrations.
Earlier in the week, the Islamist group Tehrik-i-Labaik Pakistan was proscribed by Pakistan following the arrest of its leader, triggering protests as reported by local news sources.
A Pakistani-based entrepreneur shared with TechCrunch that, despite the stated expiration time of 3:00 p.m. local time, previous governmental actions suggest the disruption may extend beyond this timeframe.
First Blanket Ban
While Pakistan, similar to India, has previously implemented temporary restrictions on phone communication, this marks the first instance of Islamabad imposing a comprehensive ban on social media nationwide.
In recent years, Pakistan has been investigating methods to exert greater authority over the content hosted on digital services operating within the country.
Some activists have voiced concerns that the nation is adopting stringent measures with limited transparency or justification.
The government’s move reflects a growing trend of controlling information flow during periods of heightened political or social tension.
Social media platforms are often used to organize and disseminate information during protests, making them a target for governments seeking to maintain order.
This situation raises questions about freedom of expression and access to information in Pakistan.
