Ouraring 4 Ceramic Review: Is It Worth the Upgrade?

Oura Ring 4 Ceramic: A Stylish Approach to Wearable Tech

Many current technology-based wearable devices are characterized by their substantial size and often lack aesthetic appeal. Considering the consistent wear of these devices, particularly on the hands, a desire for attractive designs that integrate seamlessly with existing jewelry is understandable.

The Oura Ring 4 Ceramic represents a new direction for Oura, introducing their inaugural line of smart rings devoid of traditional metallic finishes.

Material and Design

These rings are crafted from zirconia ceramic, a material selected for its enhanced durability and resistance to wear. Oura asserts that this material choice provides a compelling combination of both stylistic elegance and user comfort.

Initial Impressions and Testing

Having personally evaluated the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic over the last three weeks, a comprehensive assessment has been formulated.

It is important to acknowledge that the underlying software powering the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic remains consistent with the standard Oura Ring 4. Therefore, this review will primarily focus on the distinctions introduced by the ceramic design and material.

Detailed analysis of the software and core hardware functionalities can be found in our existing Oura Ring 4 review.

Oura Ring 4 Ceramic: A Detailed Look

The Oura Ring 4 Ceramic is offered in a selection of four distinct colors: Midnight (a dark blue hue), Cloud (white), Tide (a light teal shade), and Petal (a light pink option). This ceramic variant carries a price of $500, representing a $150 increase over the base price of the standard Ring 4, and is available in sizes ranging from 4 to 15.

I selected the Midnight colorway. While technically a dark blue, the shade can often appear black, particularly at a distance—some have even noted a dark green undertone. The ring’s design doesn’t immediately suggest it’s a piece of technology, which is advantageous for those prioritizing aesthetics alongside functionality.

Design and Dimensions

Compared to the original Ring 4, the Ceramic edition exhibits a slightly increased thickness, though this difference is subtle. The titanium model measures 2.88 mm in thickness, while the ceramic version is 3.51 mm.

Regarding weight, the ring’s weight varies between 5.1 and 8.1 grams depending on the chosen size. This makes it heavier than the Titanium Ring 4, which weighs between 3.3 and 5.2 grams.

Despite being both thicker and heavier than the previous iteration, I found the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic to be comfortable and surprisingly lightweight, even when contrasted with a conventional metal ring band. Its feel is akin to a standard ring, with only a marginal increase in thickness.

Comfort and Feel

The ring boasts a smooth surface and demonstrates a reduced tendency to attract fingerprints compared to the titanium versions of the Ring 4. Due to the warmer and less slippery nature of the zirconia ceramic, the Ring 4 Ceramic can occasionally feel somewhat “sticky,” causing the exterior of the ring to adhere slightly to the sides of your fingers. However, I quickly acclimated to this sensation.

Oura states that the coloration of the rings originates from naturally occurring minerals within the ceramic material itself, ensuring lasting vibrancy and resistance to fading over time. (It’s important to note that I have only been using the ring for three weeks, so a definitive assessment of its long-term durability isn’t yet possible, but the color remains consistent with its initial appearance.)

Durability

Oura indicates that the Ring 4 Ceramic is susceptible to surface abrasions from softer metallic materials, such as those present in kitchenware or exercise weights. The manufacturer states that these scuffs can be mitigated using the included Polishing Pad. (Notably, the review sample I received did not contain this polishing accessory.)

Furthermore, the company advises wearing the ring on the non-dominant hand to minimize potential impacts. However, I found the ring most comfortable on my dominant index finger and wore it there for a three-week testing period. This placement potentially exposed it to a greater risk of damage than a typical user might encounter.

oura ring 4 ceramic review: a colorful glow-upOn the initial day of use, the ring accompanied me on a demanding travel day to TechCrunch Disrupt, our annual conference held in San Francisco. I was uncertain about its resilience during luggage handling, accidental contact with surfaces (due to my clumsiness), or brushing against airplane windows during rest.

Surprisingly, the ring withstood all these challenges without any visible damage. There were instances where I believed I had scratched it – such as while gripping a corroded railing at the Point Arena Lighthouse, momentarily forgetting I was wearing the ring, or neglecting to remove it before washing dishes. However, no marks or lasting damage appeared.

It should be noted that while the ring boasts water resistance up to 100 meters, allowing wear during activities like dishwashing or showering, I opted to remove it during dishwashing. This precaution was taken because Oura cautions that contact with softer metals can cause scuffing.

Having used the ring for less than a month, I anticipate that some scuffs or dents may accumulate over time, particularly given its placement on my dominant hand.

Concluding Remarks

The Oura Ring proved to be more than just an attractive accessory; it provided valuable insights into my well-being, specifically regarding heart health, sleep patterns, and stress levels, all accessed through the intuitive Oura application.

I consistently anticipated reviewing my daily “readiness score” each morning. This score is determined by analyzing both immediate and extended-term data points, offering a comprehensive assessment of my body’s preparedness for the day’s challenges.

The ring’s battery performance has been impressive. A single weekly charge has been sufficient, aligning with Oura’s stated battery life of five to eight days.

Titanium vs. Ceramic: Making the Right Choice

The decision between the Oura Ring 4 titanium and ceramic models largely hinges on individual style preferences and budgetary considerations.

The primary distinctions between the two lie in color and material. Therefore, the choice boils down to a preference for a contemporary, colored finish or the traditional metallic appearance of a smart ring.

For those seeking a vibrant aesthetic and a touch of personal style, the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic presents an excellent option.
