North Korea Develops New Hacking Unit

Reports indicate that the North Korean government is in the process of forming a new hacking group. This unit is being established within the Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB), the nation’s primary intelligence agency.

Focus of Research Center 227

According to a recent report by Daily NK, a news organization specializing in North Korean affairs, the new hacking unit is designated as Research Center 227. Its primary objective will be the development of advanced offensive hacking technologies and programs.

A source within the North Korean government revealed that Research Center 227 will concentrate its efforts on analyzing Western cybersecurity systems and computer networks. This research aims to bolster the regime’s ability to illicitly acquire digital assets.

Capabilities and Objectives

The unit’s work will also encompass the development of AI-based techniques specifically designed for information theft. Furthermore, Research Center 227 is tasked with providing support and coordination for existing North Korean hacking operations conducted abroad.

North Korean hacking groups have become increasingly notorious for targeting cryptocurrency exchanges and businesses globally. Recent examples include the substantial theft of $1.4 billion from Bybit.

Previous Accusations

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have previously leveled accusations against the RGB, alleging its involvement in hacking and espionage activities. These accusations highlight the ongoing concerns regarding North Korea’s cyber capabilities.

The establishment of Research Center 227 signifies a continued investment in, and prioritization of, cyber warfare as a means of generating revenue and conducting espionage.
