Nintendo Announces the Switch (OLED Model) Release Date and Pricing

Following anticipation after its initial reveal at E3, Nintendo has officially announced the launch details for the latest version of its popular console. The Nintendo Switch (OLED model) is scheduled for release on October 8th, and will be available for a retail price of $350.

Notably, the company confirmed this launch date coincides with the release of Metroid Dread, the newest installment in the long-running and highly anticipated side-scrolling franchise.

Key Features of the New Console

The updated system boasts several enhancements, including a vibrant 7-inch OLED screen, improved audio capabilities, and 64 GB of internal storage.

Furthermore, the included dock has been upgraded with a wired LAN port, and features an adjustable stand for enhanced tabletop mode gameplay. The console adopts a striking black and white color scheme, while maintaining a similar overall design to the original model.

A dedicated carrying case will also be offered separately, designed to protect the new console’s advanced screen from scratches.

Existing Switch Models to Remain Available

Nintendo intends to continue offering the existing Switch models as more affordable alternatives. These models are currently priced at $299 and $199, respectively. It is anticipated that price adjustments may occur with the introduction of the new model, particularly leading up to the holiday season.

According to Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, “The new Nintendo Switch (OLED model) is a great option for players who want to experience the new vibrant screen when playing in handheld and tabletop mode.”

He further stated, “With the addition of this new model to the Nintendo Switch family of systems, people have an additional choice of a system that best fits the gaming experience they desire – whether it’s Nintendo Switch (OLED model), Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite.”

Color Configurations

The system will be available in two distinct color configurations, as detailed by Nintendo:

Rumors of an upgraded system, often referred to as the “Switch Pro,” have circulated for some time. With Sony and Microsoft having released their next-generation consoles last year, many expected a significant hardware refresh from Nintendo.

A revised version of the standard Switch, addressing the original model’s battery life concerns, was released in July 2019. This update directly responded to the most common criticism of an otherwise well-received console.

Despite its age, the Switch has consistently maintained strong sales figures, even surpassing the performance of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Nintendo experienced exceptional success during the pandemic, initially overcoming some supply chain disruptions.

This success was largely attributed to the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which provided a popular social gaming outlet during a time of increased isolation. The company’s success, combined with potential supply chain issues, fueled speculation about a possible delay in the new system’s launch.

Beyond the new hardware, Nintendo showcased several exciting game announcements at last month’s E3, including the highly anticipated sequel to Breath of the Wild, a critically acclaimed title in the Zelda series and a standout game for the Switch.
