Chris Pratt as Mario: Nintendo Announces Casting

Mario Movie Casting and Nintendo Switch Online Expansion
Chris Pratt will be lending his voice to the character of Mario in an upcoming feature film, a collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination, the animation studio behind “Despicable Me.” During the Nintendo Direct presentation, the identity of the next downloadable fighter for “Super Smash Bros.” remained undisclosed.
Star-Studded Voice Cast
Despite the “Smash” reveal being withheld, several prominent actors have been cast in key roles. Anya Taylor-Joy will portray Princess Peach, while Jack Black is set to voice Bowser. Charlie Day will embody Luigi, and Seth Rogen will take on the role of Donkey Kong, a casting choice that provides the representation many fans desired.
The film’s success remains to be seen, with a release date scheduled for December 2022. However, Ryan Reynolds’ performance as Detective Pikachu in 2019 was well-received, encouraging optimism for this new adaptation.
New Nintendo Switch Online Tier
Nintendo announced a new subscription level for its online service, the first addition since the initial launch in September 2018. This new tier, named Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion, will grant subscribers access to a library of classic games from both the Nintendo 64 and SEGA platforms.
Classic Games Available
The initial game lineup includes titles such as “Super Mario 64,” “Mario Kart 64” (with online multiplayer support for up to four players), “Yoshi’s Story,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” and “Castlevania: Bloodlines.” Nintendo plans to add further titles to the service over time.
The pricing for this expanded membership has not yet been revealed, but it is expected to become available in late October. The current standard online plan is priced at $19.99 annually.
Wireless Nintendo 64 and SEGA controllers will be available for purchase at $49.99 each. While these controllers are designed to enhance the nostalgic experience, they are not mandatory for gameplay.
Additional Nintendo Announcements
“Kirby and the Forgotten Land,” a new 3D platforming adventure featuring Kirby, is slated for release on the Nintendo Switch in spring 2022.
Animal Crossing Update
An update is coming to “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” in November. Details will be shared during a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation in October. The livestream previewed the return of the Roost, a café previously featured in “Animal Crossing: New Leaf,” which will be accessible within the Museum.
