CryptoPunks Sold to Nonprofit: NFT Market Update

Yuga Labs Transfers Ownership of CryptoPunks

Yuga Labs, the company behind the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club and other significant NFTs, has transferred ownership of its esteemed CryptoPunks collection to the NODE Foundation. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to the preservation of digital artistry.

The financial specifics of the transaction have not been publicly revealed, and a company spokesperson has refrained from providing any commentary.

NODE Foundation's Funding and Mission

In April, NODE announced the receipt of a substantial $25 million grant. This funding was allocated to “build the future of digital art,” originating from investor Micky Malka and Becky Kleiner. Malka currently serves as the foundation’s chair.

Acquisition and Market Context

Yuga Labs initially acquired CryptoPunks in 2022 from Larva Labs, coinciding with a period of intense enthusiasm for digital tokens. This era witnessed NFTs being sold for considerable sums, reaching into the millions of dollars.

According to the official CryptoPunks website, the most expensive CryptoPunk NFT was sold for almost $24 million in cryptocurrency.

Current Market Conditions and Future Plans

Since that peak, the NFT market has experienced a slowdown. Malka emphasized that CryptoPunks “sparked a cultural movement,” and the NODE Foundation intends to “future-proof this landmark work.”

The foundation’s goal is to enhance accessibility, enabling broader public engagement with this pivotal digital art collection.
