New Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal Restructuring - Execs Step Down

Jack Dorsey Steps Down as Twitter CEO, Reorganization Underway

This week saw a significant leadership change at Twitter, with co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey resigning from his position. Parag Agrawal, formerly the company’s Chief Technology Officer, has been appointed as the new CEO, with the transition taking effect immediately.

Agrawal, who initially joined Twitter as an engineer in 2011, has already initiated a substantial reorganization of the company. Details of this restructuring were revealed in an internal email obtained by The Washington Post, and subsequently confirmed by Twitter to TechCrunch.

Executive Departures Following the Restructuring

As part of the ongoing changes, two key executives have departed from their roles. These include Dantley Davis, Twitter’s Chief Design Officer since 2019, and Michael Montano, Head of Engineering, who joined the company in 2011.

Reports surfaced in August, via The New York Times, concerning Davis’s management style, described as “tough love.” Concerns were raised that this approach occasionally contradicted Twitter’s internal messaging, specifically the #LoveWhereYouWork and #OneTeam initiatives, which promote a “supportive, respectful, and cool” work environment.

A Twitter spokesperson explained Davis’s departure as being directly linked to a shift in the organizational structure. The aim is to establish a model with a single lead manager focused on achieving a specific company objective. Further details regarding these changes are being withheld to respect the privacy of those involved.

Focus on Operational Excellence and Faster Decision-Making

The spokesperson further elaborated that Agrawal is prioritizing operational efficiency and ensuring Twitter’s ability to meet its objectives. The move to a General Manager model, with individual leaders responsible for work aligned with key company goals, is intended to foster greater cross-functional collaboration and accelerate decision-making.

Earlier in the year, Dorsey faced criticism and legal action from a shareholder regarding his concurrent CEO positions at Twitter and Square, the financial technology company he also co-founded.

Despite previous concerns about innovation, Twitter has demonstrated rapid development this year. New features such as the Twitter Blue subscription service, Spaces audio rooms, Super Follows, Ticketed Spaces, and cryptocurrency integrations have been introduced.

Agrawal’s Vision for Twitter’s Future

Agrawal has publicly expressed his commitment to maintaining this momentum. In a recent email to staff, which was also shared on Twitter, he stated, “We’ve recently updated our strategy to hit ambitious goals, and I believe that strategy to be bold and right.”

He continued, emphasizing the importance of execution: “But our critical challenge is how we work to execute against it and deliver results — that’s how we’ll make Twitter the best it can be for our customers, shareholders and each of you.”

Square Rebrands as Block Amidst Leadership Changes

The week of significant change extends beyond Twitter for Dorsey. Following his announcement to step down as Twitter CEO, Square revealed its plans to rebrand as Block.

This dual shift in leadership and corporate identity marks a period of substantial transformation for both companies co-founded by Jack Dorsey.
