netflix tests a programmed linear tv and movie channel in france

Netflix is currently evaluating a new, scheduled linear channel—resembling traditional broadcast and cable television—for the first time (as reported by Variety). This channel will be delivered through Netflix’s website and will initially launch in France on November 5th, with a phased rollout planned across the country throughout December.

Dubbed Netflix Direct, this channel is solely for existing Netflix subscribers and will feature a curated selection of television series and films sourced from Netflix’s current library, representing content from France, the United States, and other international locations. Netflix has indicated that France was chosen for this initial launch due to a demonstrated preference among French viewers for passively enjoying programming without actively choosing each title.

Netflix has explored similar concepts before, such as a “Shuffle” feature designed to play content based on individual user recommendations. However, that feature offered a personalized experience, whereas Netflix Direct presents a consistent, pre-determined program schedule for all viewers—a format more akin to conventional television.

Despite its many advantages, Netflix currently lacks the effortless channel-browsing experience or the ability to simply relax and let television programming guide viewing choices, potentially leading to decision fatigue. This new channel could address that limitation. It represents a noteworthy trial for Netflix, and its success and potential expansion to other regions will depend on varying viewer habits and preferences.
