Netflix 'Play Something' Feature Launches Globally

Netflix Introduces “Play Something” for Effortless Viewing
Netflix has officially released a new feature designed to simplify content discovery for users experiencing decision fatigue. This tool, named “Play Something,” is now available globally. It represents the finalized version of the “shuffle” functionality previously tested by Netflix over the past year.
Upon activation, the service will initiate playback of a show or movie tailored to the user’s preferences and viewing history. The selection process isn’t random; it’s driven by Netflix’s sophisticated algorithms.
How “Play Something” Works
The feature intelligently selects content from several sources. This includes titles you are currently watching, shows or movies on your personal list, partially completed series or films you might enjoy revisiting, or entirely new content recommended by Netflix’s personalization engine.
The development of this feature has spanned a considerable period. Last year, it was initially known as “Shuffle Play.” During its Q4 earnings report, Netflix announced plans to deploy the shuffle feature to all users during the first half of 2021.
The launch sees minimal changes beyond a refined name and visual presentation.
Accessibility and Location
Users can locate the new option within the Netflix TV app, positioned beneath their profile name. It’s also accessible via the navigation menu on the left side of the screen. Furthermore, it appears as the tenth row on the homepage.
This placement is strategic, aiming to assist users who have been browsing for a while without finding suitable content. Netflix has also ensured compatibility with screen-readers through Text-to-Speech (TTS) functionality.
Addressing Subscriber Growth and Competition
This feature arrives during a period of slower subscriber growth for Netflix, a trend the company attributes to a reduced content pipeline caused by COVID-related disruptions. However, increased competition from other streaming services is also a significant factor.
The streaming landscape has become increasingly crowded. Netflix has faced challenges with content quality, evidenced by a growing number of show cancellations. Additionally, the loss of popular titles like “The Office” to competing platforms has impacted its offerings.
Consequently, Netflix is prioritizing strategies to retain its existing subscriber base and encourage continued engagement with its current catalog.
Rollout and Future Updates
The “Play Something” feature is currently available on Netflix for TV devices. Testing on mobile platforms, beginning with Android, is scheduled to commence shortly.
Update, 5/26/21: Netflix confirms the feature is now available to Android users.
