Netflix AI Search: Improved Discovery & Recommendations

Netflix Enhances Search with Artificial Intelligence
Netflix is developing a revamped search functionality designed to enhance content discovery for its users. This improvement will be driven by the implementation of AI, as stated by CEO Greg Peters during the company’s first-quarter earnings call.
Generative Technologies for Interactive Search
Peters revealed that Netflix is currently focused on creating an “interactive search” system leveraging “generative technologies.” The primary goal is to assist viewers in locating desired titles more efficiently.
The Importance of Discovery and Recommendation
Responding to a question from an analyst, Peters highlighted that the most talked-about and popular titles on the platform account for only 1% of overall traffic. Consequently, refining the discovery and recommendation algorithms is a critical priority for the company.
He emphasized, “Further improvements to the discovery and recommendation experience are possible, which will ultimately deliver greater value to our subscribers and broaden the audiences for our content.”
OpenAI Integration Testing
Reports surfaced earlier this month, as detailed by Bloomberg, indicating that Netflix is trialing a search feature powered by OpenAI with a limited group of customers in Australia and New Zealand.
Homepage Redesign for Improved Visibility
Alongside the search enhancements, Netflix has also been testing a new design for its TV app homepage. This redesign introduces a novel method for presenting show titles and their corresponding descriptions.
The company intends to implement this new homepage design broadly later in the year. Peters explained, “This represents the most significant structural change to the homepage in over ten years.”
He further added, “We are confident that this will substantially improve the Netflix discovery experience, and we’ve been continually refining it based on user feedback.”
First-Quarter Financial Performance
Netflix reported a 12.5% increase in first-quarter revenue, reaching $10.54 billion compared to the same period last year.
