Netflix Wins First Golden Globe - Best Motion Picture (Drama)

The Golden Globes in a Year of Change
The 2022 Golden Globes ceremony differed significantly from previous years, as NBC chose not to broadcast the event. This decision followed reports from The L.A. Times detailing a lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and allegations of improper influence through gifts.
A Private Event and Social Media Updates
Rather than a televised broadcast, the HFPA held a private event while undergoing internal reforms. Results were disseminated via live-tweeting, a method that proved somewhat prone to errors.
The HFPA’s Twitter account occasionally omitted the projects for which winners were being recognized. For instance, Andrew Garfield’s award was for “tick, tick…BOOM!” but this detail was initially left out of the announcement.
Notable Wins and Quiet Celebrations
Despite the controversies, the awards were presented. However, winning networks generally refrained from the usual extensive promotion of their successes.
HBO’s Strong Performance
HBO emerged as a leading network, securing a total of six wins. This included four awards for HBO and two for HBO Max.
- “Succession” was recognized as the best TV drama.
- Jeremy Strong won for best TV drama actor.
- Sarah Snook received the award for best supporting actress.
- “Hacks” triumphed over “Ted Lasso” as best comedy.
- Jean Smart was named best actress in a comedy for “Hacks”.
- Kate Winslet won best TV actress in a limited series for “Mare of Easttown”.
Netflix’s Firsts and Absence
Netflix garnered the most nominations overall, including recognition for “The Power of the Dog” and “Squid Game”. However, the streaming giant had previously announced it would not participate until the HFPA implemented substantial changes.
Consequently, Netflix did not publicly celebrate several historic wins.
“The Power of the Dog” marked Netflix’s first Golden Globe win for best motion picture (drama). Jane Campion also secured the award for best director, and Kodi Smit-McPhee was honored as best supporting actor.
“Squid Game” achieved a milestone as the first South Korean series to win a Golden Globe, with O Yeong-su receiving the award for best actor.
Wins for Other Streaming Services
Apple TV+ secured one win with Jason Sudeikis taking the award for best actor in a TV series (comedy) for “Ted Lasso”.
Hulu’s “Dopesick” earned Michael Keaton the award for best actor in a TV limited series or motion picture made for television.
Amazon Prime Video also saw success, with “The Underground Railroad” winning an award and Nicole Kidman recognized for her performance in “Being the Ricardos”.
Groundbreaking Achievements
Michaela Jaé Rodriguez of FX’s “Pose” made history as the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe, earning the award for best actress in a drama.
20th Century Studios/Disney’s “West Side Story” was awarded best picture (musical or comedy), with Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose winning best actress and supporting actress, respectively.
Disney’s “Encanto” received the award for best animated picture.
Further Awards
Hans Zimmer won for best score for Warner Bros.’ “Dune”. Will Smith was named best actor in a motion picture (drama) for “King Richard”. The award for best non-English language picture went to the Japanese film “Drive My Car”.
