Netflix Oscar Nominations 2021: Mank Leads with 10

Netflix Dominates Oscar Nominations
This year, Netflix’s original films garnered a remarkable 35 Academy Award nominations. This achievement positions the streaming giant ahead of all traditional Hollywood studios in recognition.
Leading the nominations for Netflix was “Mank,” securing 10 nods. These included categories such as Best Picture, Best Director for David Fincher, Best Actor (Gary Oldman), and Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried).
However, a high nomination count doesn’t guarantee victory. It’s important to recall that “Roma” also received 10 nominations in 2019, ultimately winning three awards but not the top prize.
Further Netflix Recognition
In addition to “Mank,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” earned six nominations for Netflix. These included Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Sacha Baron Cohen.
“Crip Camp,” a production from Higher Ground – the company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama – is also in contention for Best Documentary Feature. “My Octopus Teacher” received a nomination in the same category.
Other Streaming Services and Studios
Amazon also performed strongly, accumulating 12 nominations. “Sound of Metal” led their submissions with six nominations, including one for Best Picture.
Further nominations for Amazon included “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami,” and “Time.” Apple, meanwhile, secured its first-ever nominations with “Wolfwalkers” (Best Animated Feature) and “Greyhound” (Best Sound).
A Year Shaped by Streaming
This year’s awards season is notably streaming-focused. The COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread theater closures globally.
Consequently, the Academy temporarily waived its requirement for films to have a theatrical release to be eligible for awards. This change significantly impacted viewing habits.
It is highly probable that the majority of Academy members, and viewers in general, experienced these nominated films through streaming platforms. “Nomadland,” a Best Picture nominee and Golden Globe winner, was released simultaneously in theaters and on Hulu.
The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for April 25th at 5 p.m. Pacific Time and will be broadcast on ABC.
