Nerdio Secures $500 Million in Series C Funding

Nerdio, a platform focused on streamlining the deployment and administration of Microsoft cloud technologies, has successfully completed a Series C funding round, raising $500 million.

The company, headquartered in Chicago, reports that its valuation has increased fourfold since its Series B funding two years prior. It has now achieved unicorn status, although the precise valuation remains undisclosed.

“While we are not revealing the exact valuation figure, it exceeds $1 billion,” stated Joseph Landes, Nerdio’s chief revenue officer, in correspondence with TechCrunch.

Origins and Growth

Nerdio originated from an “IT-as-a-service” provider named Adar in 2020. Adar transitioned to private equity ownership, while Nerdio established itself as a specialized cloud management service provider. Its clientele includes prominent organizations like PayPal, Sony, and Comcast.

The company concentrates on assisting businesses in optimizing their cloud infrastructure and controlling associated costs. Nerdio Manager for Enterprise empowers organizations to effectively manage Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows applications for their entire workforce.

It automates crucial cloud infrastructure and virtual desktop management tasks. These include user provisioning, application deployment, and cost optimization through features like automatic resource scaling based on demand.

The Rise of Virtual Desktops

For those unfamiliar, virtual desktops are computing environments hosted on remote servers, rather than on local physical machines. This allows users to access their applications, files, and settings from any internet-connected device.

Nerdio positions itself as a modern, cloud-native alternative to established players like Citrix, which predates the widespread adoption of cloud computing.

This is especially relevant given the increasing prevalence of remote and hybrid work models, enabling secure access to work resources from any location.

“The complexity and expense of managing cloud environments are significant, often requiring specialized expertise and a collection of disparate, costly tools,” Landes explained. “Nerdio offers a unified, comprehensive platform that simplifies Microsoft cloud environment management, eliminating the need for additional skills, tools, or complex workflows.”

Prior to this round, Nerdio had secured $8 million in Series A funding in 2020, followed by a $117 million Series B round. The current $500 million investment was led by U.S. growth equity firm General Atlantic, with participation from Lead Edge Capital and StepStone, who have acquired a minority stake.

While specific ownership percentages were not disclosed, Nerdio confirmed that the founders continue to hold a substantial stake in the company.

The newly acquired funds will be allocated to enhancing the product suite, focusing on key Microsoft services such as Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Microsoft 365.

Furthermore, Nerdio intends to expand its workforce, currently at 300 employees.

“We anticipate significant growth in our employee base as we broaden our global reach and strengthen our customer support and engineering teams,” Landes added.
