Despite the initial subdued atmosphere, the show did feature some significant moments. Elon Musk’s virtual participation was a major achievement, regardless of individual opinions about him.

Musk, appearing via video link, discussed SpaceX’s Starlink initiative. He openly admitted that the current Starlink terminal is being sold at a loss, stating, “The terminal costs us more than $1,000, so obviously I’m subsidizing the cost of the terminal.”

He also announced plans for a more advanced satellite version next year, promising “significantly more capability.”

Focus on Networking Technology

Huawei concentrated its efforts on networking solutions rather than consumer products. It’s important to note that MWC is fundamentally a networking-focused event, despite the media attention often given to consumer device launches.

The company introduced a range of 5G networking equipment, including multiple MIMO products.

Verizon showcased a fleet of robots equipped with 5G connectivity, emphasizing the importance of cellular technology for the future of robotics communication.

According to CSO Rima Qureshi, as reported by Reuters, “5G will make it possible for robots to connect with other robots and devices of all kinds in a way that simply wasn’t possible before.”

Robotics and Future Applications

While visually striking, the robots primarily served as a demonstration of potential applications. The quadrupedal robot featured was identified as a model from Ghost Robotics, previously showcased at CES in January.

The decision to hold an in-person event in Barcelona during the summer of 2021 is questionable. However, the GSMA may have felt constrained by financial or logistical considerations.

For an organization reliant on events and partnerships, canceling a major show represents a substantial disruption.

Further updates will depend on the emergence of more compelling announcements or noteworthy occurrences. The possibility of seeing Elon Musk utilizing a hoverboard within the convention center remains a distant hope.
