Mustard Secures $3.75 Million in Funding

Mustard, a sports training platform headquartered in Los Angeles, has announced a new funding round totaling $3.75 million. This investment is led by the Lake Nona Sports & Health Tech Fund and builds upon a previous $1.7 million raise completed in late 2020.

The company’s total funding now reaches $6 million. This latest round saw participation from several prominent new investors.

Notable New and Existing Investors

Among the new investors are Mark Cuban, OneTeam Partners, Ronnie Lott, Justin Rose, the Major League Soccer Players Association, and the United States Women’s National (Soccer) Team Players Association.

These investors join existing backers, which include well-known athletes such as quarterback Drew Brees and pitching legend Nolan Ryan.

Drew Brees shared his perspective, stating that many young athletes lack access to high-quality coaching. He believes Mustard effectively addresses this issue by providing affordable and accessible elite training, and he is proud to support their mission.

The influx of new investment will facilitate the expansion of Mustard’s coaching services beyond its initial focus on baseball – a choice reflected in the company’s name, referencing the idiom “put a little mustard” on a pitch.

Additional sports now supported include golf, soccer, and football. The transition to golf appears logical, given the similarities in providing feedback during relatively stationary movements.

Part of the funding will be allocated to growing the team and accelerating the development of these new offerings.

Platform and Technology

According to CEO Rocky Collis, the new investors bring valuable experience and connections across major American sports. The platform aims to provide a personalized path to improvement for athletes, regardless of their financial situation.

Mustard differentiates itself through its sensor-free approach to data capture. This lowers the barrier to entry, utilizing a smartphone camera to analyze movement mechanics.

The technology leverages the expertise of former Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) employees. The app then delivers feedback to athletes in the form of a comprehensive “report card.”
