Despite a large following, Elon Musk hasn't won over all of his neighbors. Specifically, residents of West Lake Hills, Texas, an affluent Austin suburb, have expressed dissatisfaction with their famous neighbor, as detailed by The New York Times.

The source of the contention centers around a $6 million property Musk acquired in 2022. His team constructed an unauthorized 16-foot chain-link fence, installed a metal gate, and affixed outward-facing surveillance cameras.

Neighborhood Concerns

Paul Hemmer, president of the local homeowners association and a Tesla owner, describes the property as “Fort Knox.” He lives directly across the street from Musk’s residence.

The presence of armed security personnel and their vehicles has disturbed the peace of the previously quiet street. Some residents are apprehensive about potential further issues should Musk return from Washington, D.C.

Concerns extend beyond simple permit violations. Hemmer voiced a complaint during a planning meeting, noting Musk’s reported pattern of constructing projects and seeking approval afterward.

Escalating Tensions

The dispute has become increasingly personal for Hemmer. Musk’s security team allegedly filed a police report against him, claiming he was indecently exposed in public.

Hemmer maintains he was on his own property, clad only in his underwear. He also admits to using drones to survey Musk’s property for potential code infractions.

This ongoing situation highlights a clash between the desire for privacy and security and the established norms of a residential neighborhood.
