MoviePass Launches Fantasy League Game Mogul

Mogul Platform Now Publicly Available

The film studio fantasy platform, Mogul, developed by the MoviePass subscription service, has officially exited its private beta phase. This announcement was made by the company on Wednesday.

Currently, Mogul is accessible as a public beta, opening its doors to all interested users.

How Mogul Works

Mogul is uniquely tailored for professionals within the Hollywood film industry. Within the platform, users establish and manage their own virtual film studio.

Gameplay involves drafting a team comprised of actors, directors, and films. Points are then awarded based on the real-world performance of these selections.

The concept behind Mogul is heavily influenced by the popular format of daily fantasy sports. Players take on the role of team managers, constructing teams from actual athletes.

Platform Access and Initial Impressions

The web-based version of Mogul is now available to the over 400,000 individuals who previously registered on the waiting list.

Furthermore, the platform is actively being released to the general public.

Approximately 5,000 users, including early testers, have already had the opportunity to explore the platform’s features.

Initial experiences, even within the pre-season phase – which currently lacks competitive gameplay and a formal leaderboard – have indicated a relatively intuitive user experience.

Despite limited prior experience with fantasy sports, the mechanics of Mogul were surprisingly easy to grasp.

Getting Started with Mogul

Upon establishing a name for your studio, an initial budget of one million “Mogul Coin,” the platform’s virtual currency, will be allocated to you. This starting fund is intended for assembling your film production team.

To illustrate, the upcoming film “Wicked: For Good” is valued at $100,000, while the actresses Cynthia Erivo (portraying Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (as Glinda) each have a cost of $25,000. Director Jon M. Chu is also priced at $25,000.

A one-week timeframe is provided for finalizing your selections, with the allowance of two complimentary swaps per week.

Therefore, careful consideration is needed when making these swaps, mirroring the approach of a studio executive. For example, allegations of sexual misconduct against “Tron: Ares” star Jared Leto could potentially impact the film’s box office performance.

During our conversation, Spikes offered further advice. He emphasized the importance of identifying rising stars, as they often experience significant breakthroughs. Furthermore, exploring Bollywood productions is recommended, as they are frequently overlooked in favor of larger franchises, such as those from Marvel. Independent films also present opportunities for substantial returns.

A crucial aspect to remember is that competition is based on net profitability, not simply total gross revenue. Strategic timing is also vital; investing in a film earlier generally incurs a lower cost, while selecting one closer to its release may be more expensive.

As players advance on the leaderboard, they become eligible to receive digital collectibles, including autographed posters and memorabilia.

Currently, participation is open to a global league. The inaugural fall season will run for 12 weeks, encompassing October, November, and December, aligning with the awards season calendar. A prize pool of up to $100,000 in tokens is available for the first season, intended to incentivize user registration.

MoviePass is also offering exclusive in-app badges and Founding Member status to users who activate their accounts before 11:59 p.m. ET on October 31.

Development is underway for private leagues enabling competition among friends, alongside dedicated applications for both iOS and Android devices. Spikes anticipates a potential licensing agreement by next year, which could allow for competition with real monetary stakes.
