Move Public Folder in Windows Vista - How To

Relocating the Public Folder in Windows Vista

The Public folder within Windows Vista serves as a centralized location for sharing files and folders with other users on the same computer or network. Typically, this folder resides at C:\Users\Public. However, this default location may not always be optimal, particularly if the C: drive has limited storage capacity.

It is possible to alter the folder’s location through modifications to the Windows Registry.

Important Note: Proceed with caution when implementing this change. Several users have reported encountering difficulties following this adjustment. Thoroughly verify file permissions and create a system backup before attempting this procedure.

Moving the Folder Contents

Accessing the Public link within Favorite Links will display a list of contained folders. These folders must be copied to the desired new location.

For this example, we will relocate the C:\Users\Public folder to D:\Public. Begin by copying all folders currently within the C:\Users\Public directory to the newly created D:\Public folder.

Update - Important

Ensure that hidden files and folders are visible to guarantee a complete copy. Hidden folders, such as Public Desktop and Favorites, also require transfer. (Thanks to steve in the comments for pointing this out).

Registry Editor Modification

Open the Registry Editor by typing “regedit” into the Start Menu search field.

Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Locate and double-click the key named “Public”.

Modify the value to “D:\Public”, or the alternative location you have chosen for the Public folder.

Reboot your system. The Public folder will now be located in the new specified directory.

The original Public folder can then be safely removed, after verifying the new location is functioning correctly.
