Moovit and WeWalk Partner to Improve Accessibility for Visually Impaired

WeWALK Smart Cane and Moovit Partnership
The WeWALK cane offers obstacle detection at ground level through its physical shaft. Additionally, a smart device integrated with the cane provides detection of obstacles at upper body level, utilizing an ultrasonic sensor.
Users receive warnings regarding detected obstacles at varying distances via haptic feedback. This feedback is delivered through vibration motors incorporated into the cane’s design.
Enhanced Navigation Capabilities
According to Feghali, speaking with TechCrunch, WeWALK extends beyond basic obstacle detection, including the ability to provide directions to bus stops.
The smart cane establishes a connection with the WeWALK smartphone app via Bluetooth. This app is considered a highly comprehensive and accessible navigation tool for individuals with visual impairments.
The app integrates with both the Moovit service and a custom-built navigation engine. This combination delivers features for walking, public transport navigation, and urban exploration.
Step-by-Step Guidance
After a user enters their destination within the app and selects a route, the cane provides guidance throughout the journey. This is achieved through audio directions and low vision mapping.
The system directs users to transport stops and informs them of the arrival time of the next vehicle. It also provides alerts during boarding and upon reaching the correct stop, ensuring users disembark at their intended location.
Intuitive User Interface
A significant benefit for users is the elimination of the need to hold a phone in one hand and the cane in the other.
The cane features a built-in touchpad on the handle, enabling users to interact with their phones through gestures. This allows them to check their location, view transit schedules, locate nearby stops, and navigate to their destinations.
Real-World Example
Feghali illustrated the functionality with an example: “If a user is navigating to Imperial College London, the smart cane will announce route options and guide the user through each stage of the journey.”
For walking directions, WeWALK might announce, “Head 12 o’clock on Buckingham Palace Road for 50 meters and turn right, 3 o’clock, onto Station Road.” At a metro station, the cane will identify the correct train and provide a warning before the user’s stop is reached.
Timing and Impact
The timing of this partnership coincides with International Persons with Disabilities Day. The goal is to increase autonomy and freedom of movement for visually impaired individuals as they pursue employment, education, and social engagement.
Moovit’s Perspective
Yovav Meydad, Moovit’s chief growth and marketing officer, stated that despite increased independence, public transit can remain challenging for those with visual impairments.
Through this collaboration, Moovit and WeWALK aim to reduce mobility barriers and empower visually impaired individuals to access a wider range of opportunities.
