Light, the company known for creating a minimalist phone aimed at reducing smartphone dependency and social media engagement, is preparing to release its latest iteration, the Light Phone III, on March 27th. Like previous models, this device prioritizes essential functionality, offering features such as calling, texting, navigation, alarms, hotspot capabilities, a calendar, and music playback.

Key Upgrades and Features

However, the Light Phone III introduces significant enhancements. Notably, it features a 3.92-inch AMOLED display, a departure from the e-paper screen found in earlier versions.

Further additions include an integrated camera and an NFC chip, paving the way for future mobile payment options.

Improved Repairability and Design

Announced initially last summer, the Light Phone III has been engineered with improved repairability in mind. The battery is now readily accessible, and both the screen and USB port can be replaced by the user.

The company has also focused on enhancing the device’s usability and overall performance. Its width has been adjusted to align with that of most iPhone models, facilitating easier handling.

Joe Hollier, a co-founder of Light, previously explained that the new display would retain characteristics appreciated in e-ink screens, while avoiding the highly reflective nature of typical smartphone displays.

Usage Options and Data Plans

Users retain the flexibility to utilize the Light Phone III as either their primary mobile device or as a secondary phone for periods of intentional disconnection. This allows continued access to vital tools without the distractions of a full-featured smartphone.

Light provides its own data plans, beginning at $30 monthly for 1 GB of data allowance.

Pricing Information

The upgrades incorporated into the Light Phone III result in a price adjustment. Initially, the device will be available for $599, a rise from the $299 price of the older e-ink model.

Subsequently, the price will increase to $799, as indicated on the company’s website.
