The previously implemented system utilized what were termed “digital escorts.” These individuals were responsible for overseeing the China-based engineering teams. However, ProPublica’s investigation revealed that these supervisors – U.S. citizens holding security clearances – occasionally lacked sufficient technical proficiency to effectively monitor the work being performed.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth expressed a firm stance on the matter via X (formerly Twitter). He stated unequivocally that engineers originating from any foreign nation, including China, should be prohibited from maintaining or gaining access to DoD systems.

Microsoft’s Statement and Corrective Actions

Frank X. Shaw, Microsoft’s chief communications officer, issued a statement on Friday. He confirmed that the company has implemented modifications to its support framework for U.S. Government clients.
