Microsoft Unveils Enhanced Azure Data Platform Integrations

During today’s Ignite conference, Microsoft revealed several new capabilities for its Azure data platform. These enhancements encompass a first preview of the 2022 release of its established SQL Server suite, alongside updates to the Azure Synapse Analytics platform and innovative tools designed to simplify the migration of Cassandra workloads to the cloud environment.

Addressing Customer Challenges with a Unified Approach

A central theme underpinning these updates is a more profound integration between the platform’s diverse services – a deliberate strategy, according to Microsoft. Rohan Kumar, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Azure Data, explained that the extensive range of data services available can be problematic for users.

“A specialized service exists for virtually every data-related task. Customers can select services tailored to their specific needs,” Kumar stated. “However, we’ve consistently heard that managing this complexity is a significant hurdle. The sheer number of options, coupled with frequent changes, presents challenges. Much of the difficulty stems from the need to connect these disparate services.”

The Complexity of Modern Data Management

Users are tasked with maintaining operational databases that support their applications, while simultaneously leveraging analytics, business intelligence, and predictive services powered by machine learning. These advanced capabilities typically rely on data warehouses and data lakes. Furthermore, this data, often containing sensitive information, requires robust governance to ensure regulatory compliance, potentially spanning multiple cloud deployments and on-premises data centers.

Microsoft offers solutions for each of these scenarios through Synapse Analytics, Cosmos DB, Azure Data Lake, Purview, and other tools. The company is now prioritizing the consolidation of these tools into more streamlined and manageable systems.

Integration as a Key Differentiator

Kumar emphasized the company’s confidence in providing leading-edge services across its entire data portfolio. “However, our true competitive advantage lies in the comprehensive nature of our offerings. The ability to integrate these pillars is as crucial as excelling in each individual area,” he asserted.

New Features and Enhanced Integrations

Implementing this integration is an ongoing process, but recent announcements at Ignite demonstrate Microsoft’s direction. SQL Server 2022, currently in preview, incorporates integrations with Synapse Link – Microsoft’s solution for unified analytical and transactional database workloads – and Azure Purview for improved data governance. Support for Azure SQL Managed Instance will also be included, enabling deeper cloud integration and enhanced disaster recovery capabilities.

Synapse Link is poised to become a pivotal component of the Azure Data integration strategy, Kumar highlighted. “Significant technical innovation is required to facilitate this. Both the source and target systems must be optimized. Synapse Analytics and Cosmos DB are already optimized, and we will extend this optimization to Azure SQL and other data stores over time,” he explained.

Additional Updates and a Renewed Focus

Beyond these new features, the Azure Data team is introducing support for migrating Apache Cassandra data to Cosmos DB. Azure Advisor is receiving new features for cost management, and Azure SQL Managed Instance is also being updated. As is typical at Microsoft Ignite, a multitude of new features have been announced.

However, the most significant aspect is the renewed emphasis on seamless integration between the various Azure data products.

  • Key Services: Azure Synapse Analytics, Cosmos DB, Azure Data Lake, Azure Purview, SQL Server
  • Focus: Streamlining data management and enhancing integration between services.
