Meta Threads Ads: Global Advertising Now Available

Meta Expands Instagram Threads Advertising Globally
Following initial trials in select regions, including the United States, Meta has announced a worldwide rollout of advertising capabilities for its Instagram Threads application. This expansion provides qualifying advertisers with access to over 320 million monthly active users on the Threads platform.
Ad Placement and Controls
Advertisers will gain access to an inventory filter. This feature allows them to manage the sensitivity level of content surrounding their advertisements. The new ad placements within the Threads feed will be automatically enabled for all new campaigns utilizing Meta’s Advantage+ or Manual Placements.
However, advertisers utilizing the Manual Placements option will retain the ability to exclude the Threads feed from their campaigns.
Market Availability
Initially, advertisements will be delivered in a limited number of markets. Meta plans to progressively expand ad delivery to additional regions over time. Testing of ads has already been conducted in both the U.S. and Japan.
Competition and Growth Strategy
This expansion indicates Meta’s confidence in the Threads community’s maturity and its potential to attract advertising revenue. The company aims to compete directly with Elon Musk’s X for advertising dollars.
Meta believes its platform offers a more favorable environment for advertisers. They cite the fact that three-quarters of Threads users currently follow at least one business account.
Future User Base
During a recent earnings call, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg projected that Threads could reach over 1 billion users within the coming “several years.” He also reported a consistent growth rate of over 1 million new signups daily.
Leveraging Instagram’s Network Effects
The growth of Threads hasn’t been solely organic. It has significantly benefited from its integration with Instagram. The app leverages Instagram’s existing social graph during user onboarding.
This connection allows Threads to function as a seamless extension of users’ Instagram networks. Users can easily follow the same friends, creators, and brands they already engage with on Instagram.
Antitrust Implications
Meta’s competitive advantage, stemming from its ownership of leading social networks, is currently being scrutinized in an antitrust trial with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. A potential outcome of this trial could be the forced sale of Instagram and WhatsApp.
Adopting Innovations from Other Platforms
To further enhance Threads, Meta has incorporated features from emerging social networks like Mastodon and Bluesky.
Integration with the Fediverse
Similar to Mastodon, Meta is integrating Threads with the ActivityPub protocol. This protocol connects Threads to the broader, decentralized open web known as the fediverse. Upon completion, Threads could become the largest service within the fediverse.
Currently, the fediverse, excluding Threads, comprises over 16 million users.
Feature Parity with Bluesky
Threads has also adopted features from Bluesky, including the ability to create custom feeds and curated user lists, known as Starter Packs, for new users.
However, unlike Bluesky, Threads users are still primarily directed to the algorithmic “For You” feed upon launching the app. Furthermore, Threads currently does not offer users the same level of control over their moderation preferences as Bluesky.
