Meta Delays Release of Phoenix Mixed Reality Glasses
According to a report by Business Insider, Meta is currently in the process of developing advanced mixed reality glasses, internally referred to as Project Phoenix.
However, the anticipated launch of these glasses has been rescheduled.
The initial target for release, set for the latter portion of 2026, has now been moved to the first six months of 2027.
Details on the New Device
Meta, the company behind Facebook, currently offers both virtual reality headsets and Ray-Ban branded smart glasses.
These forthcoming glasses are anticipated to differ significantly in design.
Reports suggest a form factor comparable to the Apple Vision Pro, utilizing an external, compact power unit.
Reasons for the Delay
Business Insider has reviewed internal communications from Meta leadership detailing the postponement.
The decision followed discussions where CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of ensuring long-term business viability and delivering superior user experiences.
Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns, key figures within Meta’s metaverse division, indicated that the extended timeline will allow for more thorough refinement of the product.
They stated the delay would provide “considerably more flexibility to finalize the intricacies of the device.”
Meta's Metaverse Budget Adjustments
This news arrives shortly after reports from Bloomberg indicated Meta is planning to reduce its metaverse-related expenditures.
The potential budget cuts could reach as high as 30%.
These adjustments suggest a strategic reevaluation of investment priorities within the metaverse sector.
