Meta Eliminates DEI Programs - Company Update

Meta Scales Back Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives

According to a report by Axios, Meta is discontinuing its most substantial DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs with immediate effect.

These reductions encompass initiatives centered on recruiting a diverse employee base, providing diversity-focused training, and procuring goods and services from businesses owned by individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Restructuring of the DEI Department

The company will also be dissolving its dedicated DEI department as part of this restructuring.

A leaked internal memo, obtained by Axios, attributes these changes to the evolving “legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States.”

Industry-Wide Trend

Meta is not operating in isolation; similar adjustments are occurring at other major tech companies.

Both Microsoft and Zoom have recently scaled back their own DEI programs.

Legal challenges have been filed against programs specifically designed to support Black and Latino communities.

Changes to Fact-Checking Policies

In a separate announcement this week, Meta revealed plans to reduce its fact-checking operations on its platforms – Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

This decision has prompted a noticeable increase in online searches related to deleting Meta accounts, following the announcement made by Mark Zuckerberg.

User dissatisfaction appears to be growing in response to these policy shifts.

The surge in Google searches for account deletion procedures indicates a potential user reaction to the changes.
