Mercedes-Benz to Offer Dolby Atmos Audio in Cars | 2022 Update

Dolby Atmos Audio Coming to Mercedes-Benz Vehicles
Drivers seeking a truly immersive audio experience will no longer necessarily require a Lucid Air. Mercedes-Benz is integrating Dolby Atmos audio across its vehicle lineup, specifically in models featuring the newest MBUX interface – initially launched with the latest S-Class – alongside an optional Burmester 3D or 4D sound system.
With this integration, music formatted for Dolby Atmos will be reproduced within a vertically expanded soundscape while in the vehicle. While Mercedes suggests a “live concert” quality, the upgrade will undoubtedly provide a noticeable improvement over conventional stereo sound.
The Burmester 4D Sound System
The Burmester 4D system is a substantial upgrade, incorporating a total of 31 speakers. Six of these speakers are specifically positioned to generate the 3D audio effect from overhead.
Furthermore, four “near-ear” speakers are integrated into the front seats. Each of the four seats also includes two sound transducers, also known as exciters.
The system delivers a powerful 1750W of total amplification, including an 18.5-liter subwoofer, ensuring a high-fidelity listening experience regardless of the audio source.
Availability and Rollout
Initial availability of the Dolby Atmos feature will begin with the Mercedes-Maybach in the summer of 2022. The S-Class will follow shortly thereafter.
Expansion to other Mercedes-Benz models is planned, though it’s unlikely that entry-level vehicles like the A-Class will offer this feature in the near future.
