Customize Windows 7 Taskbar: XP & Vista Style

Customizing the Windows 7 Taskbar Appearance
A prominent visual alteration in Windows 7 is the redesigned taskbar, featuring an icon-based display rather than traditional buttons. Applications are consolidated into a single button, representing all open windows.
It’s anticipated that many users will initially seek instructions on reverting to a more familiar taskbar style. This article details the process for doing so. It's important to note that while these adjustments are possible, the new taskbar design is considered an improvement by many.
Reverting to the XP/Vista Taskbar Style
To modify the taskbar’s behavior, begin by right-clicking on an empty area of the taskbar itself. From the context menu that appears, select "Properties".

Within the Taskbar buttons section, you’ll find several options. Choosing "Never combine" will ensure each open window is displayed as an individual button on the taskbar. Alternatively, selecting "Combine when taskbar is full" will combine windows only when space is limited.

Following this adjustment, the buttons will display text labels, mirroring the appearance users may be accustomed to, albeit within the Windows 7 framework.

Further Customization for a Vista-Like Experience
Selecting the "Use small icons" checkbox within the Taskbar Properties window will reduce the taskbar’s size, creating a visual resemblance to the Windows Vista taskbar.

However, pinned icons will remain visible, differing from the appearance of Windows Vista or XP. These can be removed individually by right-clicking on each icon and selecting "Unpin this program from taskbar".

With these adjustments complete, the taskbar’s functionality and appearance will closely align with that of Windows Vista.

Additional Theming Options
For a more drastic change, the "Windows Classic" theme can be selected under the Desktop \ Personalize settings. However, this may significantly alter the overall Windows 7 aesthetic.

It is recommended to experiment with the new Windows 7 taskbar before reverting to older styles. The new design offers a streamlined experience that many users find beneficial. What are your thoughts on the new taskbar? Share your feedback in the comments below.
