Move Windows Live Messenger Icon to System Tray - Windows 7
Adjusting Windows Live Messenger Icon Behavior in Windows 7
Users upgrading to Windows 7 from earlier versions may find that the Windows Live Messenger icon remains persistently visible in the Taskbar. This can be undesirable for those accustomed to its previous location. Fortunately, a straightforward procedure exists to revert to the familiar behavior.
Returning Messenger to the System Tray
When Messenger is minimized or closed, it defaults to residing within the new Windows 7 Taskbar. To restore its functionality as it operated in prior Windows iterations, locate and right-click the Windows Live Messenger icon.
From the context menu that appears, select “Properties.”
Compatibility Settings
The Properties window will open. You can access these settings by creating a desktop icon for Messenger, or by using the icon found within the Start Menu.
Navigate to the “Compatibility” tab within the Properties window.
Within the Compatibility tab, enable the option to “Run this program in compatibility mode for.”
Select “Windows Vista” from the dropdown menu provided.
Notification Area Customization
It’s possible the icon will initially be hidden within the notification area. If this occurs, further adjustments are needed.
Access the Notification Area Icons customization settings.
Ensure that the setting for the Messenger icon is configured to “Show icon and notifications.” This will make the icon visible in the System Tray.
Final Result
Following these steps will successfully relocate your Messenger icon back to its original position. Now you have your Messenger icon back where it used to be.
This simple adjustment resolves the issue for users who prefer the traditional placement of the Live Messenger icon, enhancing their overall experience.
