Looking Glass’s innovative technology is remarkably impressive, however, its cost has previously been a significant barrier for many, with prices ranging from $600 for the 8.9-inch version to $6,000 for the 15-inch model—and the price of its 32-inch 8K display remains undisclosed. While perhaps not the most technically advanced or flexible product created by the Brooklyn-based company, Portrait is certainly the most attainable.

Priced at $349, it represents a considerable investment, although an early bird special on Kickstarter offers it for $199. Regardless, it is likely one of the most reasonably priced holographic displays currently available. In addition to the pricing strategy, the company is adopting a broader approach to usability, essentially presenting a highly sophisticated digital picture frame. The device can display up to 100 distinct viewpoints of a three-dimensional image, which, unlike some competing displays such as Sony’s new 3D display, is viewable by multiple people simultaneously.

looking glass’s next product is a holographic digital photo frameThe system is also capable of operating independently of a computer. Its standalone functionality utilizes an integrated computer to generate a holographic image at 60 frames per second. Images can be captured using an iPhone and then transformed into a 3D format with the included HoloPlay Studio software. Holographic video recording is also possible using Azure Kinect and Intel RealSense cameras.

The company suggests that this is “the first step toward holographic video calls,” potentially hinting at future developments.

“From a young age, I envisioned the day I could own a holographic display,” states CEO Shawn Frayne in a press release. “I contemplated the experience of sending a holographic birthday greeting, or greeting my descendants as a hologram. Looking Glass Portrait, the result of six years of effort from our teams in Brooklyn and Hong Kong, brings these possibilities to a wider audience than ever before.”

The Portrait is launching on Kickstarter today, with a special price of $199 for initial supporters.
