Lime is widely recognized for its distinctive green micromobility vehicles, and more recently, for acquiring the well-known red Jump electric bikes. The company is now broadening its scope in a manner that could position it as a central hub for a variety of micromobility brands, all accessible through its existing application.

The Lime application, currently utilized by customers to locate and rent its bicycles and scooters, will soon integrate electric bikes branded as Wheels in select cities. Starting this winter, users in Austin, Berlin, Miami, and Seattle will find nearby Wheels vehicles displayed on the Lime map alongside their corresponding rental costs. Customers will then be able to utilize the Lime application to rent a Wheels e-bike.

Wheels represents the initial phase of this expansion. Lime intends to incorporate additional shared micromobility services and extend this functionality to further locations.

Lime explained that it selected Wheels as the first partner for its platform due to “Wheels’ distinctive design, and the enhanced safety and accessibility it offers.” Founded by Jonathan and Joshua Viner, the creators of Wag, Wheels features a pedal-less e-bike engineered for ease of operation. Wheels has also created a shared helmet system that attaches to the bike and can be unlocked via smartphone, complete with a disposable hygienic liner.

“Consumers are increasingly seeking shared, electric, and cost-effective transportation alternatives for shorter journeys within their cities,” stated Lime CEO Wayne Ting. “Lime aims to become the primary resource for individuals seeking car-free travel options for trips under five miles. We are pleased to introduce a platform that provides riders with a wider range of choices, responding to the substantial and expanding need for alternative urban transportation methods.”

This development does not indicate any intention to acquire Wheels. Wheels will maintain its independent operation. Instead, according to Viner, who serves as Wheels’ CEO, collaborating with Lime to be featured on its app reinforces the company’s commitment to ensuring widespread access to secure micromobility solutions.

“Considering Lime’s position as the leading provider of shared micromobility services, we are enthusiastic about this partnership in furthering our goals,” Viner commented.

Wheels vehicles will remain accessible for rental through the Wheels application as well.
