Kobo Updates E-Readers: Sage & Libra 2 Get Bluetooth & Stylus

Kobo Unveils Updated E-Readers with Enhanced Features
Kobo has announced a pair of new e-readers designed to refine its premium offerings. These devices introduce Bluetooth audiobook compatibility and stylus functionality to the established asymmetrical design characteristic of its larger models.
Furthermore, both the Sage and Libra 2 benefit from a novel charging cover, extending the time between conventional charges from weeks to potentially months.
New Models: Sage and Libra 2
The Sage represents the more advanced of the two, serving as a successor to the Forma. It features an upgraded 8″, 300 PPI screen with a color-adjustable front light, now utilizing the new Carta 1200 display technology for an improved reading experience.
Similarly, the Libra 2 builds upon the Libra H2O, retaining the same display and light technology but in a 7″ format. (For those prioritizing portability, the Clara remains the optimal choice.)
Display Enhancements
The updated screen is anticipated to deliver improvements, though not a radical overhaul. While maintaining the same resolution and temperature control, it should offer faster refresh rates and marginally enhanced contrast.
A direct comparison will be conducted to assess these improvements accurately.
Bluetooth Audio and Storage
Both new readers incorporate Bluetooth audio, specifically for streaming Kobo audiobooks to wireless headphones.
This limitation to Kobo’s own service is somewhat unexpected, given the company’s historical openness to various formats and services. It is plausible that integrations with other platforms, such as Pocket, will be implemented in the future.
To accommodate this feature, both readers are equipped with 32GB of internal storage.
Stylus Support and Form Factor
Stylus support is exclusive to the Sage model, building on the functionality first introduced with the Ellipsa. The usefulness of this feature on the smaller Sage, however, remains to be seen and will be evaluated during review.
The physical design of the devices has undergone a slight increase in size and weight.
The Forma and Libra H2O were distinguished by their “side chin,” a uniquely shaped bezel designed for comfortable one-handed operation. While a preference for symmetrical designs exists, this form factor—originally popularized by Amazon’s Oasis—has proven appealing due to the thinness of the screen itself.
Design Considerations
The new Sage and Libra 2 are noticeably bulkier, lacking the ultra-thin screen section of their predecessors and maintaining a consistent thickness throughout.
While this design may offer improved ergonomics, it presents challenges for portability, particularly given the 20% weight increase. This increase, though seemingly minor in grams and millimeters, detracts from the core appeal of e-readers: their slim and lightweight nature.
Charging and Accessories
The introduction of the PowerCover, an evolution of the SleepCover, provides both protection and charging capabilities, automatically activating or deactivating the device upon opening and closing.
However, this accessory will likely add further weight to the overall package.
Overall Impression
Despite minor alterations to the design and dimensions, the screen and front light remain industry-leading, and Kobo’s software continues to provide a user-friendly reading experience.
A comprehensive review will determine how these new devices compare to their predecessors.
Pricing and Availability
The Kobo Sage will be available for $260, while the Libra 2 will retail for $180. Both models are scheduled to ship on October 19 and are currently available for pre-order.
