Klarna Pay Now & Klarna Card - Coming to the US

Klarna Expands Payment Options for U.S. Consumers
American shoppers can now utilize Klarna’s Pay Now feature, allowing for immediate and complete payment at any online store accepting Klarna.
This expansion builds upon Klarna’s growing presence in the United States, where its customer base has reached over 21 million individuals.
Introducing the Klarna Card
Alongside Pay Now, Klarna is introducing its Klarna Card to U.S. customers. This card facilitates interest-free payments in four installments, usable both in physical stores and online.
The Klarna Card integrates seamlessly with the Klarna app and is also compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Existing Klarna Services
U.S. customers already benefit from Klarna’s Express Checkout button, currently available at retailers like Macy’s and Coach.
Furthermore, Klarna offers a subscription service enabling users to pay for subscriptions and memberships in four, interest-free payments.
Klarna collaborates with more than 250,000 retail partners.
Strategic U.S. Expansion
The rollout of these services in the U.S. represents a logical progression based on Klarna’s success in other international markets, according to Sebastian Siemiatkowski, Klarna’s co-founder and CEO, in a statement to TechCrunch.
He noted that Pay Now accounts for 50% of transaction volume in Europe.
“We are incredibly enthusiastic about launching a card in the U.S.,” Siemiatkowski stated. “Our experience in other regions demonstrates that customers appreciate the flexibility of using Klarna across various platforms. Providing a physical card enhances accessibility and is highly valued by users.”
Competitive Landscape
Despite trailing competitors like PayPal in market share, Klarna’s payment solutions are gaining traction and providing increased competition within the online checkout space.
Merchants have reported a consistent increase in Klarna’s checkout share since its U.S. market entry two years ago, as indicated by Siemiatkowski.
“We believe there’s a significant opportunity to challenge the existing market dynamics,” he added.
Recent Company Updates
These new offerings follow a series of recent updates from Klarna, including the release of its super app earlier this month.
This super app aims to consolidate the entire customer journey, from product discovery to returns, into a single platform.
Acquisition of Inspirock
In October, Klarna acquired Inspirock, an AI-powered online trip planner, to integrate travel planning capabilities for its 90 million users.
The Vision for a Super App
David Sandstrom, Klarna CMO, explained that the super app is designed to replicate successful models seen in countries like China, bringing a more integrated experience to Western consumers and addressing common pain points.
“With the app, we explored how we could solve problems beyond just payments,” Sandstrom explained. “Currently, the online shopping experience is fragmented across numerous apps – for discovery, payment, and returns. The super app provides a scalable framework for launching new features continuously, and we plan to eventually open it to third-party integrations.”
