Jonah Peretti's Next Act: Can He Reinvent Digital Media?

Jonah Peretti and BuzzFeed's Constant Evolution

Jonah Peretti’s professional journey has consistently been marked by adaptation and change. As both the founder and CEO of BuzzFeed, Peretti has remained a prominent figure in the digital media landscape for nearly two decades. He has skillfully steered the company through numerous transformations, from its humble beginnings as a small startup to its peak as a significant multimedia organization.

The Question of Long-Term Stability

However, as BuzzFeed matures, a critical question arises: Does Peretti’s unwavering commitment to innovation potentially hinder the company’s ability to achieve sustained, long-term stability?

Peretti reflects on the dynamic nature of his field, stating, “The benefit of working in this sector is the constant opportunity for novelty. It hasn’t been 20 years dedicated to a single role, but rather 20 years of launching startups, overseeing rapid expansion, and navigating the process of becoming a publicly traded company… and now, the emergence of generative AI.” He emphasizes that there is always something new to invigorate the work.

A History of Adapting to Trends

BuzzFeed’s success has been largely attributed to Peretti’s capacity to anticipate and respond to evolving trends. The company initially gained widespread recognition for its exceptional ability to produce highly shareable content. A prime example is a video exploring why Disney princes would be unsuitable partners, which has amassed 77 million views to date.

Currently, BuzzFeed is heavily invested in artificial intelligence (AI), including the development of AI-powered quizzes and other AI-generated content. Furthermore, the company is dedicating resources to “BF Island,” a novel social network designed to integrate AI with content creation, aiming to foster creativity and enjoyment, as Peretti recently shared with Axios.

Openly Discussing Future Ventures

Peretti frequently shares details about the company’s forthcoming projects with the media, even during their early stages of development. He explains to TechCrunch that openly discussing these initiatives serves to improve the product itself. He believes that external feedback and potential collaborations are invaluable, particularly when a new computing platform emerges, sparking a surge of innovation.

From Viral Content to Journalism and Back

This entrepreneurial spirit has been instrumental in the creation of many of BuzzFeed’s most celebrated projects. The company was a pioneer in viral quizzes and listicles, and subsequently ventured into serious journalism with BuzzFeed News. However, not all of these strategic shifts have yielded positive results. Despite initial success, BuzzFeed News was discontinued in 2023, prompting debate about whether the company should have maintained a more focused direction.

A Rollercoaster for Shareholders

BuzzFeed’s shareholders have experienced a volatile journey. The company went public via a special purpose acquisition vehicle (SPAC) in 2021, simultaneously acquiring Complex Networks for $300 million in cash and stock. While BuzzFeed remains a publicly traded entity, it no longer owns Complex Networks, having sold it for approximately $108 million last year. Recently, another asset from the Complex Networks deal, First We Feast, was sold in an all-cash transaction worth $82.5 million. Peretti clarified that these businesses are “more production and talent heavy” rather than technology-focused.

BuzzFeed’s stock, which initially priced at $10, currently trades at $2.20 per share.

The Cost of Experimentation

A central tension exists within this pattern of constant reinvention. Peretti’s approach, while dynamic, often presents the company’s strategy as a series of experiments rather than a unified, long-term plan. These experiments also carry financial implications. Peretti acknowledges that BF Island represents a $10 million investment that is not anticipated to generate revenue this year, while affirming that BuzzFeed’s “core business” remains profitable.

It raises the question of whether BuzzFeed would benefit from a more consistent, focused vision, similar to the approach adopted by The New York Times.

Navigating the Future of Media

Determining the optimal path forward is challenging. While the media industry traditionally values stability, Peretti argues that the current advancements in generative AI are fundamentally changing content creation and distribution. He also expresses a realistic awareness of the inherent risks involved.

“BuzzFeed’s experience with new formats has been invaluable,” he states. “We consistently receive inquiries from individuals with innovative ideas who are eager to collaborate with us.”

Peretti, accustomed to balancing growth with financial constraints, concludes: “A deeper understanding is that maintaining the status quo and relentlessly pursuing incremental improvements is, in fact, a more precarious strategy than embracing innovation, experimentation, and an open-minded approach to discovering new avenues for success in a highly competitive market.”
