Jiobit Next: Improved GPS Tracker for Kids & Pets
Jiobit Launches the Next Generation of its Location Tracker
A Chicago-based company, Jiobit, initially sought to develop a superior child location tracking solution. Existing options, such as bulky smartwatches, were often insecurely designed. In 2018, Jiobit introduced its first product – a compact, modular tracker that could be attached to items like shoelaces or backpacks.
Enhanced Features of the Jiobit Next
Today, Jiobit has released the Jiobit Next, a new iteration of its device. This updated tracker focuses on improvements to accuracy, battery performance, and overall reliability.
The company incorporated two years of user feedback and practical experience into the new design. Consequently, the Jiobit is now utilized not only by parents but also by individuals tracking their pets.
Device Specifications and Capabilities
The Jiobit Next, priced at $129.99, is remarkably lightweight, weighing less than four quarter coins. It integrates a variety of technologies, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, and GPS.
Furthermore, the device features an array of sensors, such as an accelerometer/pedometer, a temperature sensor, and a barometer.
A newly designed antenna system is included to enhance signal reception within challenging environments like schools, stores, and high-rise buildings.
The Jiobit Next also utilizes low-power, wide-area (LPWA) networks to provide coverage in rural areas where traditional cellular service is limited.
The device is waterproof, rated IPX8, and can withstand submersion in up to five feet of water for 30 minutes. It also includes an alert button that instantly notifies designated contacts in case of emergency.
This alert button is customizable via the Jiobit app, allowing users to select which family members receive notifications, or it can be disabled for younger children.
Monitoring and Control Options
Jiobit owners can monitor the device through the existing mobile app, and now also through a new web application. This web app provides access to alerting and notification controls.
This expanded accessibility makes the service suitable for organizations needing to deploy trackers in the field.
Battery life has been increased by 50% compared to the previous model. Under typical usage, the Jiobit Next can operate for up to 10 days on a single charge.
Standby battery life is even longer, potentially reaching 10-20 days, which explains the extended performance observed by pet owners.
The original Jiobit was conceived by founder John Renaldi, a former Motorola VP, who discovered security vulnerabilities in existing child trackers. These devices often stored encryption keys insecurely.
To address this, Jiobit incorporated a dedicated security chip and AES-256 encryption technology, known as the “Jiobit TrustChip,” to protect data both during storage and transmission.
The service adheres to U.S. children’s privacy regulations (COPPA).
Currently, the Jiobit Next is exclusively available in the U.S., while the first-generation device supports international tracking across 146 countries.
Subscription options include a two-year plan at $8.99/month, a six-month plan at $12.99/month, and a month-to-month plan at $14.99/month. These plans do not require a separate cellular plan or SIM card.
Company Growth and Availability
Jiobit has secured $12 million in funding from investors, including Netgear and various Midwest venture capital firms.
The company reports sales in the “mid-five-figure range” but has not disclosed specific numbers.
Pre-orders for the new device are being accepted now, with general sales commencing later this month on the Jiobit website, Amazon, Chewy, and Target. A partnership with Life360 will offer special pricing to their users.
