The basics
Jackery offers the Explorer 1000 Portable Power Station and SolarSaga 100W Solar Panels as individual purchases, which I have previously assessed independently. However, they also provide a combined package ($1,599.97) consisting of the power station and two solar panels, creating a Solar Generator system – the one I evaluated. The Portable Power Station is available for $999.99, representing their premium model, although more budget-friendly options with reduced capacity are also available. The station incorporates a 1002Wh lithium battery and delivers a continuous 1000W of power, with a peak surge capability of 2000W. It features two USB-C ports, one conventional USB port, a 12V DC outlet similar to those found in vehicles, and three standard AC outlets. It includes a convenient carrying handle, a durable plastic casing, and a built-in LCD screen displaying battery level and output data.
With a full charge, the Explorer 1000 can replenish a typical iPhone up to 100 times, or a MacBook Pro up to eight times. It can operate an electric grill for approximately 50 minutes, or a small refrigerator for as long as 66 hours. Recharging is possible through a standard wall outlet (complete in seven hours) or a car outlet (14 hours). Alternatively, pairing it with the two SolarSaga panels allows for a full recharge in about eight hours of direct sunlight – comparable to the time required when plugged into a household outlet (it takes approximately twice as long, or around 17 hours, with only one panel).
Each of the solar panels is priced at $299.99 and is designed to fold in half for enhanced portability. They include integrated pockets and stands for organized cable management and simplified setup in any location. Each panel weighs under 10 lbs and provides both USB-C and USB-A direct outputs, enabling device charging without the need for a battery or power station. It’s important to remember that these panels are not waterproof, so care should be taken when using them during unfavorable weather conditions.
Design and featuresThe Jackery Portable Power Station successfully combines ease of transport, functional utility, and robust construction. They are also safeguarded by a durable polycarbonate exterior, and the panels are designed to withstand high temperatures for enhanced longevity. Included output converter cables facilitate connections to USB-A and USB-C devices, and they can be used with the Power Station’s adapter to charge the unit individually or in combination.
Adjustable kickstands on the rear of the panels allow for optimal sun positioning across a variety of angles to maximize energy capture. Together, these panels and the Explorer Power Station provide everything needed to establish a completely mobile solar power generation system in minutes with minimal setup required.
Bottom lineDuring practical application, the Jackery Explorer 1000 Portable Power Station delivers a substantial amount of reserve power, proving difficult to fully deplete during standard tests. Significant power draw requires connecting high-consumption devices, such as a Blendtec blender, to noticeably reduce its capacity; even with such a device, I achieved approximately 12 hours of operation or greater. This makes it an excellent choice for powering specific appliances independently of the electrical grid during camping excursions – items like a television, compact refrigerator, or projector – and it serves as a valuable resource for home use during power failures, offering self-sufficiency that can maintain productivity or facilitate communication with loved ones.
The SolarSaga panels function as a superb addition to the Explorer, effectively transforming the system into a compact, self-contained renewable energy source. Even for those hesitant about the cost or need for full-scale residential solar installations, like those utilizing Tesla’s Powerwall, this setup provides a convenient method for powering a cooler in the yard without incurring energy expenses, or for prolonging the Explorer’s runtime during extended off-grid adventures.
