iOS 15.2: Apple's New Safety Feature for Kids in Messages

Apple's iOS 15.2 Developer Beta 2: Communication Safety Updates
Apple has made available the second developer beta for iOS 15.2. This update introduces support for a new communication safety feature within the Messages application.
New Feature Details
Announced earlier in the year, this feature aims to empower parents with greater insight and control over their children’s online interactions. It was unveiled alongside the debated CSAM detection technology, the rollout of which Apple postponed due to public concerns.
The core function of this new Messages capability is to assist parents in guiding their children through the complexities of digital communication. Utilizing on-device machine learning, the system analyzes image attachments to identify potentially sexually explicit content.
Privacy Considerations
A key aspect of this technology is its commitment to privacy. All image processing occurs directly on the user’s device, meaning Apple does not gain access to, or read, the child’s private messages. This is implemented as a Family Sharing feature, requiring parental consent to activate.
How the Feature Works
When a sensitive image is detected within a message conversation, it will be automatically blurred. A label reading “this may be sensitive” will be displayed beneath the image, accompanied by a link allowing the user to view the content.
Should the child choose to view the image, an additional screen will appear. This screen provides further information, explaining that sensitive photos and videos often depict private body parts and emphasizes that receiving such content is not the child’s fault, but can be exploited for harmful purposes.
Changes from Initial Plans
It is important to note that Apple has refined the communication safety feature since its initial conception. Originally, the company intended to notify parents if a child under 13 viewed an explicit image.
However, following feedback highlighting potential risks to children, this notification component was removed. Apple responded to concerns about the potential for increased conflict or harm.
Availability
Currently, the communication safety feature is accessible within the iOS 15.2 beta. The official release date for this feature remains unconfirmed by Apple.
